I did this because I felt,  along with advice from Rina,  that this best represented Newson.  The colour choices were also deliberate, orange felt like a must when trying to represent Newson. Not only is Newsons website themed orange, but many of his work is too, so in order to meet the brief, I also used blue, which worked well.

I wanted to make emphasis on the use of negative space in Newsons work and I think it really worked well in this case. The way shadows cast on the 2D relief is a very interesting aesthetic, but made it very important for me not to crease the paper during construction. Having said that i knew that i had to carry the theme of negative space through to this task, and through a process of elimination i decide d to commence with this design. I went onwards with this design because it  is a very natural shape with no sharpe lines of edges (very characteristic of Newson).

I decided to photograph this task in an alternative way, to emphasise the negative space. I really like the way the shadows are cast when placing a light in the model. When outdoors, the model fits in  well, but also stands out in its environment. Marc has a very distinct design style, typically using smooth, geometric lines and Shapes, as well as playing with translucency, transparency and negative space.  Most notably for me was the lack of Sharpe edges and straight lines. In order to fully gain an understanding of this, I looked at pieces such as the Voroni Shelf Collection, the Orgone Chair and the Qantas First Class Lounge. In this work, it is clear that Marcs design style is consistent, with organic, biomorphic references throughout. 
 
This led me to the selection of the Embryo Chair to base my work off. For me, the Embryo Chair represents Marcs design work best, with organic, smooth lines, and the use of negative space. I decided very early in the term to remove the legs of the chair from my work. This was because of the nature of the work we were asked to do, in which I believe it would have been too cluttered and 'busy'. Further, removing the legs emphasised the negative space of the embryo chair, which is important to fully do emulate the design style of Newson.

Whilst I got off the a less than desirable start with my 'Exhibition Poster', I am very pleased with the progression of this terms work, despite the difficulties surrounding Covid-19. I enjoyed the challenge of being randomly assigned a designer, and I think this has taught me a lot in just a small period of time.

My first attempt was unsuccessful and the paper I was using was too think, and I cut each shape out individually and used tabs to try and join them together, which just cast an ugly shadow because of the bump on the surface. In this AS, I used thinner paper, and incorporated more folding in order to achieve a smoother finish.
