The two cities bombed would have been firebombed anyways. The immediate use of the bomb convinced the world of its horror and prevented future use when nuclear stockpiles were far larger. By using a nuclear bomb, it eliminated a large area of where the Japanese soldiers were. Even though a number of American soldiers and civilians were lost, the number of Japan's soldiers went down drastically.
