Mateship is an Australian cultural idiom that embodies equality, loyalty and friendship.

The term mate originally stems from the German word "gemate" which means to share a meal at the same table.

Research:
Mateship calls on communities to come together during hardship, adapt to challenging circumstances and provide a fair go for all.

Many associate Anzac Day with mateship in Australia but the roots go back much further.

The origins of mateship in Australia can be traced back to the early days of European settlement in the harsh and unforgiving environment of the Australian Outback, early pioneers and explorers relied on each other for survival. The formed close-knit communities based on mutual support, trust and loyalty.

Famous Australian bush writers such as Henry Lawson drew on the concept of mateship trusting it as part of the Australian bush tradition of the late 19th century.

Mateship to me means looking out for one another. Been there for my family and friends at difficult times and well as good times, like birthdays and celebrations.
