This was painted in 1886 while Van Gogh was studying in the academy of fine arts in Antwerp. During his studies students were assigned to draw skeletons to learn about the human anatomy. However Vincent made his version unusual and ironic by adding a lit cigarette. The smoking skeleton represents the rebellion( επανάσταση) against the strict art rules of the academy. On a deeper level, the work may expresses Van Gogh’s thoughts about life, death and the fragility of human existence. The painting also shows that humans often create habits so bad for them, it may kill them. The skeleton smoking a cigarette a cigarette might suggest that life is short and people face it when carelessness. It’s also shows Van Gogh’s bold creativity and emotional depth.

My favourite painting of Van Gogh is starry night because Van Gogh managed to capture his feelings while watching this view and make the painting feel alive with the bright colours he used to emphasise the glowy stars and moon.
