I would identify my ethnicity as Canadian, as this is where I was born and raised. But my ethnic roots weren't always Canadian.

My dad's side of the family comes from Germany and first moved to Canada with my great, great grandfather. That is where I maintain my last name from - Fonger. While my mom's side of the family is originally Irish with the last name - Geick. They also moved to Canada with my great great grandfather. While this still was four generations ago, these are the roots of my ethnicity.

I had never met my great grandparents, nor my grandparents for that matter. My grandparents had passed away when I was young, and I never got the chance to meet them and get in touch with my ethnicity. While my ethnicity isn't the most important aspect to me in my life, I would still like to get a better sense of the culture where I'm from. Because I lack this connection with my ancestors before me, my ethnicity has never been a big factor to me. I am a fourth-generation Canadian and a lot of the practices from my ethnicity haven't been passed down. What I do know and have are my Canadian roots, which are important to me and are a part of my culture that I would like to pass down my own family tree.

My geographic origin is based in the prairies. On my mom's side, I know my great grandfather had owned a farm outside of Three Hills, Alberta. As my Mom would always tell me stories of visiting her Grandfather on their family farm.

My dad's side is also similar, they grew up as Prairie farmers outside Saskatoon Alberta. To my knowledge, this started with my great grandfather and had passed down to a lot of their children.

When I was first born, for the first six years of my life I grew up in Turner Valley, Alberta. Raised on a farm, and constantly visiting the prairies, farm life has always been a comfortable place for me. It has a huge affliction to who I am and what I do today. I currently work on a ranch outside of Calgary, being a farmer's assistant. If I didn't grow up on a farm and share my origin with the prairies, I would most likely not enjoy farming. However, because I have grown up on a farm, and the lifestyle is very common to me, I have a great attitude towards working at a farm.

My religious and spiritual background is not very strong, or very important to me. Both my parents were raised Catholic but had grown away from the religion and decided not to impose it on me and my brother.

Instead, my mom took the charge and decided to raise us as Buddhists. Buddhism is one of the most popular religions in the world. However, practicing it when I was younger felt less religious and more spiritual in nature. I had practiced Buddhism until I was about 7-8 years old, then my parents had let me and my brother decide what religion we chose to practice.

While this is my spiritual background, it also isn't very important to me. I had never been forced or pushed to practice religion beyond Buddhism when I was young, and since now in my 20's a lot of the beliefs and practices have faded. I would consider myself to be Agnostic for the time being. As I do believe in a higher power beyond us, I can't exactly say who or what that is. For these reasons, my religion is not very important to me.

As I do have a lack of ancestry, I don't maintain a lot of cultural practices. I still would celebrate common Holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and Easter. These are the main holidays I have celebrated as a kid and would like to carry on to my kids as I feel it is very important in childhood.

My family has never been too close, and I have not had any previous notable celebrations or ceremonies I can recall with my family. We would celebrate basic holidays, and birthdays but that was about it. I never attended any aunt/uncle birthdays, as I actually have never met any of my cousins. Funerals were never a time for our families to get together or even for thanksgiving. Most of these holidays were celebrated with family friends.

My cultural practices aren't very important to me because I haven't been raised with certain ceremonies or celebrations. What is important to me is the holidays and birthdays as I feel it is a good time to come together as a family and feel the core holidays are an important part of life and should be celebrated.

While my mom always believed in hard work, and kindness. These are the main values I have grown up to know in my life, and the set of beliefs I was raised on.

While my mentors through hockey have always taught me teamwork, accountability, and togetherness. This means your always look out for the person next to you, and are accountable for your actions. I feel these are great values to maintain in yourself and are one's I will want to pass on.

I do feel these values and beliefs are very important to me, I want to raise my kids under the same set of values, as they have basically made up who I am and how I identify myself today. I feel these values make you a morally strong person, with a strong mindset.

The only language I have used for my family is English. Although I have been influenced by French/Spanish language and cultures. French is Canada's second language and I had learned a good portion of it through school. As well as Spanish, which was a language I had started to learn in high school, and a culture that has influenced me growing up.

I feel languages and cultures have had the greatest influence on me with how I think and feel, even my values and beliefs. Languages help me understand other countries' cultures and allow me to feel more invested in their way of life. I feel this helps open up my thinking process and worldview with other countries. Helping me better understand where someone has come from, and what their world views might be. Regardless that everyone has their own world views, we can grow to understand one another through their language and culture.

I am connected to my community in a few ways. Through my job as a line cook at Earls in Westhills. I am directly connected to my community, through making food for everyone that comes into the restaurant. This allows me to cook for people in my community, and provide a safe space to enjoy restaurant dining. I am apart of the team that offer's this to my community and proud to say so.

Apart with this, I write for a local blog, covering junior hockey in Alberta. This helps me stay in touch with community sports, the players who are making their way through the ranks, and learn more about our sports community. It is a great way to connect with parents and kids in community sports.

I feel community activities are very important, in my life and should be in many others. They help you get to know your neighbours, feel involved in your community, and get to know the type of society you live and are surrounding yourself in. It helps us get a better understanding of everyone else's worldview in our community, which is very important for getting to know people better.

Knowledge help's us to be more informed. Giving us the chance to be more knowledgeable on a topic and thus, allowing us to better understand it. There are many sources of knowledge, from books, the internet, our teachers and mentors, you can even teach yourself knowledge if you are open-minded.

We can't guarantee if something is true, but we can believe it to be true. So to answer the question I do feel belief is true knowledge, but with that knowledge can also be concrete data. I feel it is a third space where both facts and beliefs come together to provide self-belief in the knowledge and facts to back it up in society. This allows us to trust in common knowledge in our community, and help learn as a collective

My social reality is definitely a collective. My reality is defined by my friends, and my connection to them. A lot of people say you are the sum of your 10 best friends, and I feel this to be true. Who you associate yourself with, and how you act with those people is a reflection of your social reality. I take great honour in the honesty and relationship between me and my friends, and is why I see my social reality as a collective.

Growing up on a farm I feel there is a huge connection to land, animals, plants, and mountains. There's a connectedness shared between all things, and how you treat this is reflective of who you are. There is a certain amount of respect one must give to all things, and I feel that respect is gained through a collective social reality. By having a collective social reality to people and the land, I am allowing myself to open up my worldview, and gain the respect of people, and non-people.

My beliefs and practices around the world lie under three important words. Honesty, respect, and happiness. I feel that in a world full of honesty we can gain more trust for one another, this trust can help us better understand one another as a person. The other one is respect, which is something more people in the world needs to learn. Having respect for the person next to you lets you be equal to them, no one greater or worst. When you see yourself as equal to one another, then you can begin to understand each other and respect our worldview more. The Last one is happiness, as happiness should be spread throughout the world. I feel there isn't enough happiness at times, and it can really signify your place with others. I really feel my place in the world is to spread happiness and therefore strengthen my relationship with people.

There weren't a lot of stories shared with me during my childhood, however, there are two significant ones I can recall from both sides of my family.

A story that was passed down from my grandpa, to my dad, and then to me, is about being apart of a Canadian platoon that was stationed in Normandy. He wasn't apart of the first group that actually seized the hill, but was sent shortly after the fight was over. I member my dad, would say my grandpa would describe holes in the ground the size of dump trucks. Debris still on fire, and smoke throughout the air. My dad alway's mentioned this story to me when I would tell him I wanted to grow up to be a cop, swat, or in the military. This story always made me feel proud of my grandpa, and privileged to be a Canadian. Even though I had never met my grandpa, that story helps me feel proud to be his grandson.

On my mom's side she would tell me stories of going to her grandpa's farm in Three Hills. They had ton's of land, and raised chicken, cattle, and horses. She would tell me stories of how my dad would of had to walk six miles everyday into town for his work. While the kid's would stay at the farm with grandpa and help work. She would describe how they loved going there for the weekends, and would help out and spend time with their grandpa. This story always makes me feel connected when I go work on the ranch, and makes me proud to be a farmers hand. I feel I am recognizing my grandpa's roots and somehow connected to him even though we have never met.
