The song "Like a Stone" was released in the year of 2002 by the band "Audioslave." It came from their first self-titled album with the same name as the band and was released a little over a year after 9/11. This period was also when technology began to advance rapidly. The combination of rapidly developing technology and how recent 9/11 was caused many mental health disorders to arise, resulting in more attention being directed towards mental health.

Key Lyrics and Analysis

At the 3:40 mark of the song, Chris Cornell states that he “And I sat in regret, of all the things I’ve done. For all that I’ve blessed, and all that I’ve wronged.” This lyric is crucial to my essay as it creates a connection between those affected by the death of close ones due to 9/11 and the Cornell who reflected on past events that negatively affected him. This connection helps define the cultural impact this song had after the events of 9/11, as mental health disorders began to be given more attention.

At the 0:35 mark of the song, Chris Cornell states that he “was lost in the pages of a book full of death”. This quote is also crucial to my essay as it emphasizes the severe depression singer Chris Cornell had during the time this song was released. This metaphor helped express Cornells longing for death, which could be connected to the families of lost ones in 9/11, as these family members may have had negative thoughts relating to suicide because they missed their loved ones that much. This was so essential to my essay as it was able to be linked back to a main point in my thesis. The main point being how the lyrics of this song defined life after 9/11.

Though this song doesn't include the entire band, the use of only Chris Cornell's voice and acoustic guitar makes this song feel a lot more soulful and makes the emotions more raw. In this performance, it truly feels like Chris Cornell is singing from his heart and it helps highlight the emotional burdens he carried from depression.

Though this song is not "Like a Stone", it helps highlight Chris Cornell's life. This video serves as a reflection for fans of Chris Cornell on his life, as it highlights important aspects like his children being born, his wedding, and even how he started writing music from his own experience. This music video was made due to the singer's tragic suicide in 2017, and will aid in understanding Cornell's struggle with depression as you listen and read about his other song "Like a Stone."
