What makes dialogue authentic? If you were reading a story that didn't have names or any ways to identify the characters, how might you be able to distinguish what a 12 year old said from a 20 year old character?

I think when dialogue is authentic, the conversation flows and moves well, but not in a random way. Everyone speaks and expresses themselves in their own way, and I think when dialogue is written well you get a sense of the character's personality just by how they speak to others. Good dialogue captures and keeps your attention. I think while a 12 and 20 year old would speak with different vocabulary and things, their look on the world and their expirience in the world also influences the way they talk and voice their opinions.

Accents bring personality to the character, and sometimes even brings about their past.

When a 20 year-old speaks, you will probably hear a wider variety of vocabulary. 12 year-olds might talk in what trend is going on.

Authentic dialogue is when what a character is saying is connected to their character. Also, if they have an accent there should be an accent. A way of identifying different people apart using dialogue is mostly possible because of the tone, like how a war hardened veteran would seem tough or weary depending on their character, and a 12 year old with out any 'real' life experiences would seem much more naive.

Authentic dialogue always has emotion and uses vocabulary that makes sense. What I mean by that is when you are writing dialogue, the situation, the character, and how the character is feeling right now should heavily impact the dialogue. If you're not completely jumping into those situations and putting yourself in the character's shoes, it will be difficult to have authentic dialogue. I would be able to distinguish what a 12-year-old said from a 20-year-old character by looking at their language and emotions, but I would honestly say that sometimes the difference wouldn't be prominent. You have very mature 12-year-olds and pretty immature 20-year-olds. You also have a vocabulary gap that can honestly vary from character to character. I argue that age sometimes isn't the only thing we can use to tell two characters apart just from their dialogue.
