More specifically they both had power but the US has always been seen as a great leaver of one of the most powerful countries. So if they had let the USSR win the Space race the USSR would be seen as the new most powerful country The second way was because they would have some type of dominance in space. If they had a type of power of Space the US would be more powerful. Also, a lot of countries would be afraid f the US because they would have power on the moon. The last one is that they wanted people to see that they were greater than other countries because they could do that.  And that they had a lot of money to be able to send a man to Space. Also, they would be looked at as an even more powerful country.
