And how he asked his brother to take over his place as duke so he could pursue it, only to have his brother betray him in the end. But instead of wallowing in self-pity, he uses the knowledge of magic that he's attained to control both Ariel and Caliban. While also conjuring the tempest itself. He could have given up, but instead, he used his knowledge to better his circumstances and bring all of his past enemies, and friends, onto the island.

Perspective is a funny thing within the tempest. In the case of Antonio and Prospero, it can be argued that from Antonio's perspective, Prospero wasn't performing his duties as duke to the best of his abilities. Ultimately causing him to take his place. But, in the perspective of Prospero, he betrayed him and took what was rightfully his. Perspective is important in thus sense because it brings to light the differnt experiences and view points of each character.

While the boatsman, orders them below deck. The king's councilor, Gonzalo, reminds the boatswain that he is speaking to the king, but the boatsman points out that if the king really has so much power, he should use it to stop the storm. If he lacks this power, the royal party should go below decks, as the boatsman orders. The king and his peers have ultimate power most of the time, but in this case the boatman is the one who holds the power. Creating a new dynamic between the characters.

Power

The dynamics of who has and doesn't have power are a powerful theme within "The Tempest" and in real life. It's true that some individuals seek power to have control over others, while also wanting to have power and control over their own lives. This can be seen in both Acts 2 and 3. In Act 2 Scene 1, Antonio and Sebastian are found to be the only ones left awake after Ariel puts everyone to sleep. Throughout their conversation, Antonio is trying to convince Sebastian to kill his own brother, Alonso, the King of Naples, in order for him to inherit power. This plan is able to work because with Alonso out of the picture, his daughter residing too far away to obtain the rule of Naples, and his son’s all but certain death, Sebastian is guaranteed to succeed the crown and take over his brother’s kingdom. Taking advantage of the circumstance surrounding Alonso’s daughter Claribel, Antonio was able to persuade Sebastian and asks him if he understands what he's saying "Methinks I do" (Temp. 2.1.307). Upon seeing the opportunity to gain more power, Sebastian takes it, further supporting the plot device of wanting to gain power and influence. The concept of wanting to gain more power can also be seen in Act 3 Scene 2, when Caliban tells Stephano that "As I told thee before, I am subject / to a tyrant, a sorcerer, that by his cunning hath / cheated me of the island" (Temp. 3.2.46-48). He also says that if Stephano were to kill Prospero, he would be the island’s ruler and Caliban would be his willing servant. Caliban sees Stephano as an opportunity to take back his power and get revenge on Prospero. And Stephano sees this as an opportunity to gain power, this can also be said for Trinculo as well. The constant need and want for more power in "The Tempest" only shows that power makes people feel important because it gives them what they want. Human desire never ends, so power can never achieve all of a human's wants. Humans will always want more, which can mean more power or more influence over people. Creating an endless cycle of greed that no one can escape from.
