In 1991, the president of Somalia, Said Barre is ousted and there is a power struggle multiple clans and tribes which led to the beginning of the Civil War. Because of this, many people were killed and led to the escape of many Somali people to other countries all over the world. Generally, Somali people tend to perceive mental health as something that does't affect a person as serious as a psychical ailment. In the home, the kids are allowed to be boisterous and loud and that is a sign of growth and development while in the school, teachers encourage an inside voice & to stay seated.
Boys- In the Somali community, boys in the families are treated better than the girls. Because of the treatment, they are expected to do well in school and be good overall. The same expectations are set for the girls as well but the boys have more freedom.
Islam- The religion of Islam is very important to the Somali community and in school, students might need to be excused at certain times to pray one of the five daily prayers that usually falls around lunch time.
Family- Somali people are very family centric and family orientated. In crisis and in good times, they stick together and fix familial issues by talking it out.
Education- Because of the war and famine in Somalia, people who have immigrated to the US and other countries value the importance of an education to propel the community to a better life. A lot of parents are hard on their kids to do well in school.

Longfellow Elementary EL teacher Mary Cunningham has a collection of Somali/English that she reads to her Somali students caseload to make them feel welcome & represented in the class (she does this with every ethnic group she teaches) 
-Although this is a general idea for all kids, treat the boys and girls in the classroom the same with exactly similar expectations and rules
Promote the involvement of the Somali parents
