- Battle of Fort Sumter: Fought in April on South Carolina, the South won.
- Battle of Rich Mountain: The South won and General Jackson got the nickname of Stonewall, the North realized this war was going to be serious.
- Battles of Ball's Bluff and Chustenahlah: The South, after battles won by the North, won the last battles of the year and finished strong.
Battles of 1862
- Battles of Mill Springs, Fort Henry, Roanoke Island, and Fort Donelson: First Battles of the year that the Nort won.
- The Battle of Hampton Roads: Fought in March andd was a draw, it was the first fight between two ironclad warships, the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia.
- The seven days battles: The Union won at Malvern Hill, but McClellan withdrew after the battle, allowing Lee and the remaining confederates to escape.
- The Battle of Anteitam: On September 17, McClellan ended Lee's invasion of the North at Antetiam. This was the bloodiest single day of war with 22,717 dead, wounded, or missing.
Battles of 1863:
- Battle of Stones River: The first battle of the year, on Tennessee, with a Union victory.
- Battle of Chancellorsville: Fought in May, where Lee defeated Hooker, but Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded.
- Battles of Vicksburg and Port Hudson: These victories effectively ended the Confederates' ability to use the Mississippi River.
- Battle of Gettysburg: Fought on July, this was a major Union victory. Finally led to the Gettysburg Address.
Battles of 1864: 
- Battle of Fort Stevens: Fought in the District of Columbia, Abraham Lincoln went to observe this battle and the guy standing next to him got shot.
- Battle of Georgia: A major Union victory won by General Sherman.
- Battle of Georgia: This battle solified the Union control of Atlanta.
Battles of 1865:
- Battle of Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia: Fought on April 8th, 1865, which resulted in Lee's surrender to Grant, there were a few more minor skirmishes, but the war was over. Union wins.
