In Renee Watson's coming of age novel, Piecing Me Together, the protagonist, Jade is in her junior year but her first year at St. Francis. She kind of had to join because her scholarship got accepted, and that private school was full of opportunities for her future. Jade wasn't really interested in going at first because she would want to go back to her old high-school with her friends, but she realized there would be many opportunities and friends. Jade wants to be someone who will speak, express, and create all around the world to make a difference, and with that big development she has joined a program called Woman to Woman to make that future happen to make the difference between the society of women in the future, and to hopefully have a great impact and inspire others.

This character faces complex troubles such as being poor and going to a school full of people who are rich, unlike her, as a result she feels left out, different, and like she doesn't fit in with everyone else at school. Her dad also doesn't live with her and her mom works too much to see her regularly.
