When working on math homework with your child, it is important to validate any frustrations they may have. Normalizing their feelings helps create a safe environment for the student to work through problems rather than shut down. If your child is coming to you for help, avoid asking questions about what the teacher said to do and avoid contacting the teacher right away. Instead, work with your child to solve the problem and model how to respond when you do not know what to do right away.

MYTH: "All children with dyscalculia have the same difficulties with math."

Fact: Dyscalculia actually refers to a wide range of math issues. For example, some kids with dyscalculia have a hard time with number concepts. Others have difficulty with the kind of visual-spatial thinking that’s needed for geometry. What most kids with dyscalculia have in common are challenges remembering basic math facts and completing math problems.

1. Multisensory instruction, also known as... play with your food! Think cooking for fractions, snack foods for groupings and multiplication, sharing food with friends for division, and similar. In general, use tactile and even olfactory senses to reinforce abstract thinking.

2. Another example of this is in music: kids can play notes on a piano based on groups (e.g., "give me 2 groups of 3"), or skip count using the black and white keys, or tap drum beats, or clap!

3. Got math anxiety? Try using an extra piece of paper to cover up most of what’s on a worksheet or test so the students can focus on one problem at a time.

4. Assistive technology - varies widely and is primarily used in conjunction with formal IEP/504 supports.

4. Games! Mostly for fluency and practice - not for a new lesson. Examples include "Say Cheese," "tri-FACTa," "Prime Climb," and apps like "Tech Finder."
