The military began to struggle with the decreasing number of enlisting soldiers with not enough food or supplies. But as a tactic for the government and military to get through the second World War, they began to use propaganda and involve it in everyday life. It was an effective wartime persuasion strategy and extremely necessary considering how much they were struggling. It urged supply donations, victory bonds, military enlistment, and the rationing of meat and fuel. In the media with propaganda use, it was highly surrounded with patriotic symbols, historical figures, and worthy causes. There was always encouragement to do your part because it was a shared, patriotic goal and if you didn’t, there was a sense of shame, embarrassment, and judgement that came with it. It had become a very large industry which focused on aggressively expressing unity in the media they were showing the public. “Propaganda during the war was used through a variety of media to further persuade and influence patriotism and the support of the war.” (Canadian War Museum) Since everyone saw the media in daily life, whether it had been a poster on the street, talked about on the radio, expressed on television, or in posted advertisements, it became an extremely discussed topic of conversation at the dinner table, on the playground, and in the classroom. Eventually there were parades, rallies, and charity events held. Over time, more and more Canadian citizens became involved and wanted to show their support and gratitude, including the 700,000 recruits under the age of 21 that had enlisted in the war from the influence of propaganda media. The use of propaganda was also useful in bringing attention to the most intelligent intellectuals, artists, and filmmakers. Seeing what was triggered in civilians after the frequent use of propaganda proves how successful and effective it was in supporting the military and war effort even while at home. Without the patriotism the majority of Canada felt during World War 2, Canada may have lost many more battles and would have indefinitely lost plenty more soldiers.
