Reading this book really resonated with me because it gave me a new perception of true love. From this book, I learned that love, either with a significant other a friend or family, can be messy, full of challenges and hardships. On the more positive side, I also learned that love can be very beautiful, rich with strong feelings and emotions. I saw the importance of communication and acceptance, and how crucial it is to be there and uplift each other at our lowest lows and highest highs. My biggest takeaway from this book is that everything happens for a reason, and that sometimes our biggest setbacks bring us to the most beautiful outcomes.

Costa Question #1 - What does Augustus's initial reaction to love and affection towards January suggest about his past relationship and his life growing up?

Throughout the text, it is clear that Augustus Everett is a stranger to love and affection, a concept in his life that he does not know quite how to respond too. When January and Gus start to get to know each other, and their assorted pasts start to arise, we begin to see that the topic of love was not a subject that Augustus knew very well. Growing up with a tattered home life, such as an abusive father and parents that no longer loved each other, love and affection was not something Augustus got to see or experience growing up. As January and Augustus start to dive deeper into each other's flaws, fears, and lives, January learns that Gus was married. Their relationship did not end well, and broke Gus's perception of love and genuine devotion. This is why when January and Gus begin to reach a vulnerable place with each other, expressing feelings, Gus seems skeptical, unsure, and not ready to take that next big step with January. His ability to love was weak, and his response to affection was even weaker.

Costa Question #2 - Due to January and Augustus's brief encounters when they attended the same college, do you still believe they would be in love and getting married even if they did not end up being next door neighbors years later? Why?

No, I do not believe that January and Augustus would have ended up the way they did if they were not next door neighbors, regardless of their brief past in college. I believe that the majority of the reason as to why January and Gus ended up the way they did, deep and love and soon to be married, was due to their close proximity to each other as next door neighbors. Part of the reason they ended up where they did was due to the strong connection they formed as next door neighbors. Over that time together, January and Gus were able to open up to each other, learn more and more about each other every day, and gradually falling deeper and deeper in love.
