Sherink Natalia Herrera Martínez

The professional practice of psychology is governed by a series of regulations that guarantee that this profession can be exercised correctly. These principles and ethical guidelines are detailed in the psychologist’s deontological and bioethical manual. Therefore, the psychologist should review the professional performance, accept the responsibility and avoid unfavourable situations.

The psychologist has to practice with certain principles such as beneficence, non-maleficence and double effect, which address the preservation of human integrity, where the psychologist has to do good practices that generate the greatest possible well-being. The psychologist has to assist, prevent and mitigate the risk of harm.

Therefore, the professional has to evaluate the consequences of his interventions and make an analysis of the positive and negative effects, so the psychologist can`t do interventions whose relevance or effectiveness is not proven or cause serious adverse effects.

Although, the psychologist can have autonomy about his intervention, he should always act with the patient`s consent and promote a professional relationship.

Finally, the psychologist shouldn`t reveal sensitive information, he doesn`t have to manipulate the conscience, the psychologist does not have to maintain any erotic-affective relationship and this should not obtain any type of benefit for himself or for a third party.
