The 9/11 terrorist attacks were the events that helped shape other financial events of the decade. After that terrible day in September 2001, our economic climate was never to be the same again. It was only the third time in history that the New York Stock Exchange was shut down for a period of time.
Trends

Often a stock simply moves according to a short-term trend. On the one hand, a stock that is moving up can gather momentum, as "success breeds success" and popularity buoys the stock higher. On the other hand, a stock sometimes behaves the opposite way in a trend and does what is called reverting to the mean. Unfortunately, because trends cut both ways and are more obvious in hindsight, knowing that stocks are "trendy" does not help us predict the future. (Note: trends could also be classified under market sentiment.) (http://www.investopedia.com/articles/basics/04/100804.asp Happens yearly normally sometimes monthy

liquidity

Liquidity is an important and sometimes under-appreciated factor. It refers to how much investor interest and attention a specific stock has. Wal-Mart's stock is highly liquid and therefore highly responsive to material news; the average small-cap company is less so. Trading volume is not only a proxy for liquidity, but it is also a function of corporate communications (that is, the degree to which the company is getting attention from the investor community). (http://www.investopedia.com/articles/basics/04/100804.asp) Happens all the time

Nothing gets the attention of the U.S. media quicker than a good-old-fashioned scandal. Insider trading, fraud, cooking the books and other high-end, white collar scams have all collapsed popular companies and negatively impacted the markets in the recent past. Household names, such as Enron and Bernard Madoff, caused plummeting stock prices and created a domino effect with associated businesses and firms. Cheating investors is illegal and leads to jail time, worthless stock prices and large-scale corporate layoffs, which can affect the market and hurt even those who were not involved in the scandal.

In today's world, press coverage seems to be one of the main factors involved in why a stock market will plummet or rocket. In August 2011, the stock market saw huge upward spikes and downward drops when the United States' credit rating was lowered a couple of points. Likewise, a large-cap industry giant saw its stock price plummet when one of its founders stepped down from his post because of medical reasons. You could certainly argue that in both these cases, neither event would have made much difference without the overabundant media coverage.
