My sister has ASD, so it's something that has surrounded me my whole life. One thing that I have noticed about students with ASD is that when they hyperfixate on something, they can rarely focus on something else, especially if it's something they get excited about. This is why a lot of my assignments allow students to choose what they do (whether it's write a play, act, etc) so that they can hone the activity to their special interests and be more enthusiastic about their work.

I currently support students with frequent check-ins and try to simplify instructions when there seems to be confusion with a task or assignment. Other than these past two years, I have not had a lot of interaction or experience with students with ASD. Looking forward to learning more.

ASD Overview

ASD to me means someone who views and takes on the world in a different way than myself. No right or wrong way but a unique perspective with unique needs. Within my "classroom" I currently support my students with ASD by giving them leader-roles so they feel in control (my current ASD students enjoy being in control of situations and ensuring others follow the rules). When their behavior starts to switch due to do outside factors and circumstances, I quickly find the source of the problem and take necessary next steps to get them a-okay.

ASD means there could be a variety of learning differences from some really intelligent individuals. I try to get to know my students individually because each one may need a little something different from me to be successful. Sometimes I use a variety of activities, sometimes I need to provide more space for a student, or there might be other needs as well that I need to meet.

Every student I've worked with with autism has had unique needs. Every one of them had a good work ethic. Depending on the student, I've modified assignments (by length and space for writing) and worked with them one-on-one with them. When working in small groups, I monitor them a bit more closely to try to encourage them to speak, share, and collaborate.

My students so far have had fun personalities. These students are just as capable as other students, just may just need to communicate and learn in slightly different ways

I support them by giving or telling them agendas if needed, I also just like to have genuine conversations with them to get to know them as well, figure out their interests
