Coleman, the man conducting the study, used surveying to collect his data. There are some discrepancies about it all because there can never be certainty that all the kid's home life is what is affecting them in school. However, based on the data collected from the survey, it seems to be the case that a rough family life at home has had a large impact on negative school performance. Families with low incomes are more likely to be crime oriented or live in a neighborhood that has a great deal of crime. This means that the neighborhood schools won't necessarily be at the top of the list of the best schools in the U.S. which provides data that says kids with low income parents are less likely to succeed in school.

The authors reviewed four family variables including family education, family income, parents' criminal activity, and family structure. Their research showed educated parents with a higher income are more likely to live in an area with better schools which means a better education and a more positive school scene. Kids growing up in a household with criminal parents in jail are more likely to end up struggling in school or be homeless. There are still questions behind it but it is a widely discussed topic. There really isn't a specific fix for the problem because it would take generations to fix parental education in order to decrease likelihood of criminal parents, but researchers should focus on quasi experimental approaches to assess problems that can be fixed.

The study was well designed because surveying allows a good study of the environment without any factors being controlled or manipulated so it allows for accurate results. However, this also creates a problem because there is no control in the environment so results may be inaccurate due to a third variable that may be unknown. Another problem that may arise is the participants may lie or not tell the full truth about the extent to their circumstances so there may not be comparable data.

Implications for Practice:

This implies that when working with children, I should be aware that the true circumstances can never be known, but there truly are so many children out there that struggle at home. I can always listen to the children and believe what they are saying and put in my best effort to help them in school and socially after learning about their cirumstances. Implications of this research are understanding the fact that so many kids experience issues in their family life that affect them at school. It is important to recognize this is not a problem that can be fixed overnight, but rather a process that requires a look into how we can help children at an early age that will struggle with issues in their family life by providing them with the support they need. The earlier in life that this is provided for them, then the easier it will be to teach them that they have so many opportunities in their life and they should not disregard that just because their parents did.
