<title>OLIGARCHY Athens, where democracy was born, started with a different kind of government in its early days. Athens started with a government called a oligarchy. An oligarchy is the rule by the few meaning that the least amount of people have power. This was started when a group of rich men called the aristocrats took over society. They ran the cities economy and also served as generals and judges.</title>

<title>TYRANT The people of Athens were tired of the aristocrats harsh rule of society so they wanted a new government. In 546 B.C. a noble man named Peisistratus overthrew the oligarchy and became the ruler of Athens. Peisistratus was called a tyrant which means he held power through the use of force. Today, a tyrant is a ruler who is harsh but back then it meant that that they kept their rule because of their strong armies and because of the people&#39;s support. Lots of stuff improved in his rule, he brought peace and prosperity to the city and he began new policies to unify the people. There were new temples and festivals and the city was doing pretty good in my humble opinion.</title>

<title>DRACO Draco was a man who came to power during the oligarchy and he made a harsh set of rules for the Athenian people. The people weren&#39;t very fond of these rules because a minor crime like loitering could be punishable by death. The people were tired of this so eventually a new leader came to power... </title>

<title> CLEISTHENES Around 500 B.C. a new ruler, Cleisthenes came into power and was what the people called the father of the democracy. He created a type of government that encouraged the people to get involved in government. They were aloud to go to all meetings and assemblies that the town had, it was their right They voted on things usually by a show of hands but sometimes by secret ballads and when they had a big thing going on or any major decision he would have a slave go around and put red dye on some peoples clothing and if they were hit by the red dye then they had to go to the assembly or would be confronted by a great fine and because the assembly was so large and sometimes it was difficult to make decisions, they selected city officials and other people to serve on smaller councils. </title>

<title>PERICLES Athenian democracy lasted for another 170 years. The height of democracy was under a man named Pericles. The people were encouraged to take pride in their city and in their government and that being part of government is just as important as defend Athens in war. Pericles began to pay people who served in public offices or on juries and encouraged his associates to tell other parts of Greece about democracy.</title>

<title>END OF DEMOCRACY Eventually, democracy came to an end in Athens. The Macedonians conquered Athens and it fell under strong Macedonian influence. Even when it was conquered it still kept it&#39;s democratic government but it was a government with very limited powers. The Macedonians kind ruled like a dictator so no one could make any decisions without his approval. The people still met to make laws but they had to be careful not to upset the king and they couldn&#39;t make drastic changes without the kings consent. They weren&#39;t very happy with this situation, but they feared the kings army so they lived with it. Eventually a new king took over and ended democracy in Athens forever. Nothing gold can stay</title>
