This horrifying image shows the terrorist attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Center. On September 11th, 2001, the plan of the al-Qaeda Islamic extremist group broke the hearts of all Americans. The terrorist hijacked four American planes on that Tuesday morning. Two of the suicide attacks targeted the US World Trade Center in New York City which housed thousands of American employees. The first plane hit the 80th floor of the skyscraper. It killed many instantly and trapped hundreds on the floors above. Devastatingly, hundreds jumped from the building to avoid burning to death, thousands were attempting to make final calls to home and the government were in shock that this event occurred. The second plane hit 18 minutes later and nailed the 60th floor of the other tower. The third plane hit the Pentagon in Washington, DC and the fourth plane failed and crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. This event is commonly known as “9/11.” Approximately 3,000 people were killed on this day of the terrorist attack according to History.com. These blows on American soil caused explosions leading to “showers of debris” falling into adjacent buildings and the people on the streets (History.com). The US was under attack.

September 11th became a day of mourning after the year 2001. It marked the day America was attacked right under their nose. This event changed the way of life for Americans. They could not live safely anymore; they learned that they weren’t protected for everything. The idea that no one could violently touch American soil was lost. The effects of our national security at airports, military personnel, government control, and the fear of terrorism are all reasons this event was so important.
