The session was incredibly powerful and means I have a lot of work to do. I appreciated her reminder that "You need to know what you don't know." I will speak with my own children about their textbooks, the butter in our fridge (that no longer will be), and I will continue to follow and listen to her work so I can know more and do better.

Themes of Inclusivity and Diversity in Education- Carolyn Hillarious

Today's workshops by different presenters fit together like pieces of a puzzle ...a puzzle that represents the diversity in world. We heard Debbie Reese, Jillian Haise and Teresa Bruner talk about questioning our biases about race/identity and acknowledging that inclusivity can only happen when we begin to have conversations with our students and begin identify them by how they see themselves.
As an international educator of Indian Heritage, born in Kuwait and has working in multiple cities around the world ...these workshops really amplified my own thinking of identify. I think about Debbie Reese's definition of identity ..."you have to identify a person not by what you see but what they say there are." It's time we stop identifying kids by what we see on the surface and take the time to get them to make those. Cristina James did just that...with the power of Ted Talks and a lot of faith she helped her Students break down prejudices and amplify their identity with the power of TedEx. What an Inspirational day!

Picture Books, Photos, and Perspectives: Visual Literacy As a Tool for Fostering Empathy - Frannie Hermes

There are SO many creative and effective ways to support student's critical thinking about the world and they way we all see it. I teach Early Childhood and there is a place, and should be, for discussing current issues and the way the world is portrayed through news, social media, etc., and it can be addressed in a child-friendly way. I am so grateful for all of the ideas and resources shared today. I have been inspired to use photos and pictures to empower children to see the world with empathy and take action!
