What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem? (Alana Nguyen)

“The Soul selects her own Society — Then — shuts the Door —” The soul can be seen as a girl with a variety of societies to choose from. She selects the society she wants to live in and blocks out all other societies from her field of view. This establishes a recurring motif throughout the poem because it is clear that its main goal is to share that people choose a select group of individuals to stand by them while excluding everyone else. Like a ride-or-die type or friend where you don’t need anybody but them.

What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?

Emily Dickinson uses simile to contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem. In the 11 and 12th line, she writes, “Then–close the Valves of her attention–Like Stone—” A stone is used to compare the process that hides the Soul from others. Since a stone is hard and tough, comparing the Soul to one implies toughness and strength. The simile shows how stubborn the Soul is. The poem emphasizes self-expression, and since the soul is saying they “close the Valves of her attention—Like Stone–” they are saying that they turned away from society. Since they turned away their attention and energy from society, they are comparing themselves to a stone because they are inanimate objects that don’t engage with anything.

What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone?

The poem's tone throughout the stanza's displays feelings of loneliness and carelessness. Words that reveal the tone can be found when Dickinson writes, "To her divine majority - Present no more". This illustrates the feeling of loneliness the author might feel when they close off a specific society in their life, almost like cutting off opportunities or people from your life. Another phrase that reveals the tone is seen when Dickinson writes, "Unmoved - an Emperor be kneeling Upon her Mat". This shows the other tone displayed throughout the poem, carelessness. Even if a person as important an Emperor came to her she couldn't care less, as she's solely focused on her own society.

What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The theme of the poem is that everyone gets to choose their own society of who they want in their life, focus in on them. The idea of choosing the people your surrounded with can be seen when Dickinson writes, "“Then–close the Valves of her attention–Like Stone—” This illustrates how Dickinson would who she would like to be around and zone in on building relationships with those specific people and then she would, "close the Valves of her attention" for other people. This supports the main idea of choosing your own society as she would only focus on the people closes to her and would tune everyone else out.
