After Rick sees Ilsa with her husband Victor Laszlo, we are thrown into a series of flashback scenes where we see Rick and Ilsa together, living rather blissfully and full of love. All seems utterly perfect between the couple until the very end when Rick receives a note written by Ilsa, informing him that she will not be living with him and cannot ever see him again. The sudden halt in this sequence of romantic memories created by the scene of him alone at the railroad station leaves the viewer feeling stunned and with a lack of closure, much like how Rick felt. This creates a point of engagement for the viewer, as they are left curious to find out why this might have happened to such a perfect seeming couple.

Character development convention of Drama

Throughout the entirety of the film prior to Ilsa's reappearance in Casablanca, we are presented with this incredibly stern and bitter characterization of Rick. We are to accept him as a character who is incredibly detached and doesn't "stick his neck out for anybody". However, once he sees Ilsa again, this characterization is broken as he reflects on the past he held with her. In the flashback scenes, we are introduced to a much more lighthearted and loving Rick which we get no exposure to beforehand. These scenes allow the viewers to develop a sense of sympathy for him, as we can now assume after these memories his melancholic nature has manifested as a result of the bitter ending of his relationship. Along with this sympathy, a sense of yearning to root for Rick and Ilsa is developed alongside this as we fail to ever see her nearly as happy in any scene with victor.

Drama and Romance convention working together to deliver a compelling film

Ultimately, both the romantic and dramatic conventions of this film work together to develop a compelling film through Rick's characterization. By the time we make it to the end of the film, we can interpret Rick as this anti-hero character who in the end sacrifices his own desires for the sake of others. This intensity-filled ending serves as an idealistic close as we are left curious as to what he may decide to do right until the very end.
