What happened was a group of male doctors stalked female surgeon’s social media accounts with their own fake accounts. They then published a scholarly article on how female doctors posing in swimsuits on their private accounts was unprofessional and makes them bad doctors. This caused an uproar of protest from female doctors and nurses all over social media. They started posting themselves in swimsuits and labeled their posts as #medkini. What really irked me about this, was that what a women does in private does not reflect how a woman performs professionally. Although the paper was removed, there is still a double standard when it comes to women in the medical field. They are held up to higher standards than their male counterparts and this is wrong. Men in this field could pose shirtless with an alcoholic beverage in their hand and still be seen as professionals in their career. This movement is important to women studies because it shows how women are still fighting for equality currently.
