This is significant because Esperanza just wanted to fit in. Esperanza was trying to be someone that she is not because she only wants to eat from the canteen because all the other “special” kids are eating from one. Once she was at the canteen eating lunch, she couldn’t understand what was so special about it. Esperanza was trying to get rid of her otherness by eating with the special kids even though she had a horrible time eating at the canteen.

Cisneros also used dialogue to create a scene and develop the characters in the readers minds. Lastly, Cisneros use lengthy sentences with commas to make the sentence read slower and have a specific center where the narrator is writing the vignette around.

Esperanza was disappointed with the canteen and she was only allowed to eat there for that one day.
