Pocket vs Pinterest

Pinterest and Pocket are both social book marking tools that allow information to be stored in a visual way. It is very easy to make an account on both of these websites, all it takes is an email address and a password. Once this information is filled in your account is created. The platforms allow you to search for content that you are interested in, they ask you to choose topics that you would like to see and cater your feed to your choices. This removes content that you may not be interested in.

While these websites are similar, there are a few key differences between them. Pinterest consists mainly of images and videos that you can ‘pin’ which essentially saves them to your account whereas Pocket is more article based. In my opinion, Pinterest allows the user to be more creative than Pocket as you can create ‘boards’. This allows the user to store the content that they have saved in a way that they find easy to navigate. Within the ‘boards’ that the user creates, images may be moved around and rearranged, allowing the user to store the information as they want. Pocket does not allow for this as the articles are stored in chronological order and cannot be moved around. My favourite feature with Pocket is that you can highlight sections within the articles that you save, this allows the user to find the key information that they were interested in without having to look for it again. When it comes to Pocket vs Pinterest, I would choose Pinterest as I find it easier to search for content I like, and I can store the information in a layout of my choice.

The social media tools that I used throughout this module include padlet, pocket, Pinterest, map mashup, screen casting and YouTube. I had used Pinterest and YouTube before, but I had never heard of or used Padlet, Pocket, Map mashup or screen casting before starting this module. I have really enjoyed using new platforms to display and share information and I now feel that I have many different options when it comes to displaying information that I did not know about. Padlet was one of my favourite new social media tools that I learnt about during this module. “Padlet is a web 2.0 tool which can be used to share information, images, audio or video files on virtual walls”( Deni, A., & Zainal, Z. (2018)) I had no issues when it came to setting up my padlet account, it was extremely straight forward to set up and the account was free. I really liked how on padlet you can change the background of your wall; I feel like this is a really fun feature to play around with. I also thought it was very interesting that you can add in pictures and links, I think padlet is a really great way to display your ideas as you can include so many different features. Pocket is an app that I had never heard of before starting this portfolio. Pocket is a bookmarking service that allows you to save and share your web bookmarks. “ Social bookmarking is the process of tagging a website page with a browser based too so that you can easily visit it again later” (Arens, E.(2019, February 19))The account is very easy to set up and takes less than a minute. When your account is set up, they ask you to select some topics that may interest you, they then provide recommendations. I really liked this aspect as I felt it like they were setting up an account personalised for me. The app has different sections for your saves, collection, and discovery. My favourite feature of Pocket is that you can highlight sections within an article, this makes it very easy to go back and find the key points that interested you. “Social bookmarking is increasingly being used in many organisations, and may enhance employee innovativeness by providing a new, socially mediated channel for discovering information”( Gray, P. H., Parise, S., & Iyer, B. (2011) ) Pinterest is an app that I frequently use, It is as easy as pocket to use but instead of articles Pinterest content is mainly image based. You can create boards which is a great way to save the images that you want in an organised and logical order. “Pinterest, a pinboard style social photo sharing website”( Hansen, K., Nowlan, G., & Winter, C. (2012)) I found the map mashup quite complicated to use as I have not had any experience with creating any type of map before, so this was completely new to me. I would have been very lost if I had not been paying attention in the lecture where we were shown how to create the map. This helped me a lot and I then was able to complete my map with less problems. I was intrigued by how you could change so many details in this map to create it exactly how you wanted to, I was fascinated by how small changes could drastically change the information on the map. This is a social media tool that I am very glad I got the chance to learn about. Screen caster was not a tool that I have ever used before, but I was intrigued to learn more about it.” Screen casting defined as creating a video recording with or without audio of real time actions and/ or content on a computer screen”( Glusker A. (2021)) I found screencast- o-matic easy to use once I had watched a video of how it works. The main challenge I faced when completing this section of the assessment was when trying to upload my screen recording to YouTube. Every time I tried to upload my recording it would fail. To overcome this problem, I had to save the screen recording to my laptop and then upload the video to YouTube from my files. Once this worked, I enjoyed editing my video and then learning how to publish on YouTube which is not something I have ever done before. After this assignment I now know how to post on YouTube and use screencast-o-matic which are skills I am glad to have learnt. Bibliography 1. Deni, A., & Zainal, Z. (2018).

Reinventing a Privacy Policy for TikTok

- As TikTok is a user generated platform, users have the right to access, delete and correct any content that they post. TikTok urges users to delete any content that they no longer wish to be on the platform.

- Users have the right to access, delete or amend any personal information that TikTok has of them.

- Once the creator has deleted an original video, any re-posts of that video will also be deleted.

- Users have the right to know how their information is being used by TikTok. Personal information is not passed on to third parties by TikTok.

- Information is used to help to improve TikTok. This includes selecting content that is relevant to you. It also includes providing filters and sounds that can be used at your location.

- TikTok has the right to remove any content that users might find offensive or harmful. This ensures that users are safe while using the platform.

- Users who break guidelines and create harmful or offensive content and comments should be removed and banned from the platform. There is a zero-tolerance policy for any user that creates content which breaks guidelines.

- A user whose account is private has the right to change that function whenever they would like. If a user’s account is private their content should not be allowed to be reposted even by their friends and followers.

- TikTok can be granted access to the user’s camera and camera roll but only when the user is creating a video, otherwise TikTok should not be able to access either feature.

When I was asked to reinvent a privacy policy, I was not sure on what to include. I decided to base my policy on TikTok as it is my most used social media app. The rationale for my policy is that I believe users should have full control over what happens to their content. Therefore, the main points in my policy include user having control over every aspect of their information and content on TikTok. I also believe that it is crucial to ensure users are safe while using the platform. This is why I would create a zero-tolerance policy on banning users who make harmful or offensive content.

DIGILIFE REFLECTION

How can I apply my learning on this module to create a personal digital strategy which supports my control of my digital presence?

Throughout this module I have learnt that your personal digital strategy is exceedingly important as it helps with establishing your online brand. As we live in an age where social media is becoming increasingly popular in all aspects of our lives, it is vital that your online presence portrays exactly how you want to be seen. This causes us to want to take control of our digital presence so that we can portray the best versions of ourselves in the online world.

In this module I have learnt that your personal digital strategy should work as a roadmap to creating your digital presence. Defining your goals early in the creation of your digital presence helps you to identify what type of content you want to produce, who your target audience is and what platforms you want to use to promote yourself. “ There are many ways to slice and dice a strategy. Most importantly it must serve as a blueprint, a framework, or a roadmap.” (Rum, 2016).

While completing this portfolio I have learnt a lot about my digital presence. A tool that we were asked to create a profile on for this assignment was LinkedIn. I have heard a lot about LinkedIn since starting college, but I had not created an account. I was surprised to see how easy it was to set up my profile and add in all of my information. “LinkedIn, for example, promises to make the worlds professionals ‘more productive and successful’ by providing ‘access to people, jobs, news, updates and insights that help you be great at what you do”. (Utz, 2016). LinkedIn is an amazing platform to help build your professional platform. It allows you to connect with people that you know, potential future employers and industry experts. This helps to build your digital presence as you are establishing yourself in a professional work environment. LinkedIn allows you to control exactly what industry and what professionals that you want to connect with. This ensures that you see information that is relevant to you, I think that this helps to build your personal digital strategy as the platform works as a gateway into the industry you want to be kept up to date and involved with.

This module has taught me a lot about data visualisation. Before completing portfolio, A and B I did not know that there was such a huge variety of platforms that could be used to display data online. I really enjoyed creating my infographic as it allowed me to be creative and experiment with different visual tools. I think that infographics are a great way to visually display your personal digital strategy as the points are concise and you can use images to map out what goals you would like to reach and in what order. “ If you are trying to understand something complicated, infographics help your brain to work through it quicker. This, in turn helps your business communicate its end goal quickly and more effectively”. (Alves, 2022)

I found completing the e tutorials for this module every informative. We had to complete these until we reached 100%, I found this very beneficial as by the time I had completed the exercise to 100% , I had a great understanding of the topics that the tutorials were based on.

Before researching into privacy policies for this assignment I used to always click accept without reading anything as it always seemed too long and unimportant. “ A privacy policy is a document on your website that tells users how and why you’re collecting their information. It spells out how you use that data, why you use it, and if it’s shared with others.” (Masha Komnenic CIPP/E, 2022). After completing this module, I now know how vital it is to read though these policies. Having control over your digital presence is a factor that is extremely important for your personal digital strategy. it is important as you want to have control over what your data is being used for. This includes ensuring that your videos and pictures are not being distributed to another party, your personal information is being kept private and not being sold by companies. “Sometimes it’s used for things like targeted or retargeted advertising. Sometimes it’s sold to other companies via data brokers or other means”. (Manuel, 2022) Having control over what happens to your data once you share it is crucial to ensuring your privacy is kept save. I will now always read through the main points of privacy policies before agreeing to make sure that I am happy with what will happen to my data. I slightly struggled when I first started trying to reinvent a privacy policy for TikTok, which was the platform that I based mine on. I struggled with this as I was really unsure as to what I actually wanted in a privacy policy but as I completed the assignment, I realised that for me the key part of a privacy policy is ensuring that the user has control of all information recorded about them and also to have complete control over the content that they produce.

Finally, peer feedback has been very important for me throughout this module. “It is defined as a way whereby students assess the quality of their colleagues’ performance and give feedback to one another” (Ion et al., 2016) I have learnt a lot from receiving feedback from my peers. The feedback has helped me to improve my work as often their recommendations for improvement are not things that I would have spotted myself without an objective viewpoint.

To conclude, before completing this module and portfolio I did not have a personal digital strategy. This module has encouraged me to think about my digital presence and how I want to portray myself on online platforms. I now know that it is crucial to have control over your digital strategy so that you can promote yourself on the right platforms and in the correct way to be able to connect with the people who share similar interests and views.

Bibliography

Rum, J.
