The author describes before how Georg and Ulrich were stuck in a pile of wood; Ulrich was able to grab a wine flask. Using the words/phrases, "open winter", "warming", "reviving", "groans of pain", and "weariness crossing his lips", the author was able to portray a feeling of suspense and fear.  The quote is telling what is going on with Ulrich as he is able to drink the wine in the freezing cold. Leading the reader on what might happen next as Ulrich has his strength back and is warmer than his opposite. Moving forward in the story, it helps the reader imagine what the story might be like, making the reader feel as if they are really a part of the story. It helps describe the setting and how it's changing throughout the story.

The quote is saying that Georg wanted to make a peace offering to Ulrich to settle the fight between. "as boys they had thirsted for one another's blood, as men each prayed that misfortune might fall on the other and this wind-scouraged."
