I will be comparing the following:

1. Occupations
Juno of Taris and The Giver have completely different occupation systems. In Taris, citizens are allowed to chose whatever occupation they desire. They may be a doctor, gardener, etc., while in The Community, jobs are minimal. These occupations range from a birthmother to an engineer.

2. Death as a concept
Death is a concept that is feared in The Community, and is therefore hidden from the citizens. This is known as the 'Release to Elsewhere', and is celebrated. The citizens are unaware of this concept, and have no knowledge of such whereas in Taris, this is a part of life. People often volunteer to give up their own life in order for a new life to be created.

3. Education
Education in The Community is the same, everyone is encouraged to learn the same thing, however, they have absolutely no knowledge of the past. It is hidden from the citizens because the Elders believe it is harmful for The Community. In Taris, the older generation is aware of reading and writing, while the new generation uses pictographs. Taris and The Community might be different, but they have a similarity as well, and that is having no knowledge of the past.

Individuality
Individuality is not encouraged in either Taris or the Community however they are shown in different measures. In Taris, individuality is discouraged as everyone has to have their heads shaved and are forced to wear clothes that they have no choice over. In the community, citizens are also not aloud to show their true colours by having everything chosen for them.

Death
Death as a concept have two different meanings in the Community and Taris. In the Community, death is not recognised as something bad and is known as being Released to Elsewhere whereas in Taris, death is recognised and is an established part of life. Citizens of the Community believe that being released to elsewhere is a celebration in contrast to Taris, where they are saddened when someone dies.

Surveillance
Surveillance in the Community is full on and citizens are always being monitored whereas in Taris, it is not as extreme. In Taris, the word gets around by citizens however in The Community, government can always hear and see their actions.

The real parents of the babies are chosen on how smart they are and how good their characteristics are. However, In the Giver, babies are examined closely and then they are chosen to live or die. The babies in the Giver must be healthy and 'normal' so that there is no differences between the people.

Control of Citizens
On Taris, the government controls the lives of the citizens. They have schedules that they need to follow, regular meetings, selected families, strict rules and the governance companions lie to keep everyone in order. Similarly, In the Giver, citizens are under 24hr surveillance, have injections so that they can only see and hear selected things, selected families, strict rules and a lying government. All citizens in Taris and on the Giver are not allowed to rebel against the government or they will be punished.

Death as a concept :
In both Taris and the community there are very different concepts of death, the formation of emotions and thoughts towards death are strongly controlled by the government thus generally resulting in the similarity of concepts for citizens in both places. In Taris, death is chosen and accepted by all citizens but also deeply sorrowed as everyone is open to the knowledge of what death truly is. In contrast, people of the community are hidden to the fact of what death is and how it occurs. The government of the community choose who die leaving no choice for the citizen but it doesn't generally affect them because death is known and taught as a release to elsewhere which is supposedly painless.

Occupations :
Both Taris and the community have extremely strict processes of selection for career paths. In Taris, citizens are publicly asked to become apprentices for specific jobs but in the community jobs are chosen for the citizens and they are given no choice.

Genetics :
In Taris, citizens must ask to have a baby as there are minimal resources for only a set number of people, which is why they are only able to have a baby when another citizen dies. In the community, it is not officially shown to the viewer where babies come from. Citizens are able to adopt these babies but only the healthy ones as the government sends the unhealthy ones to elsewhere which the people of Taris do not do.

Whether it were to be a romantic or just a friendship, showing signs of love an affection was no sin on Taris. Even though citizens needed to follow the rule of only marrying someone within your learning stratum, emotions were felt and present within society. On the contrary, within the community emotions and feeling for another person are taken away through to daily routine of morning injections. Citizens of the community have no knowledge of love and happiness, therefore cannot obtain true emotional feelings.

Genetics
On the island of Taris the selective breeding in humans is practiced. In Taris not just any citizen is allowed to breed children of there own, only the citizens who where scientifically logic. Other citizens who weren't scientific must choose the parents from the outside stock. On the other hand, in The Giver, no citizen living in the community is to breed on natural terms. Babies are born through the birth mothers and then assigned to a dwelling. Parents and their children in the Giver aren't as emotionally connected to each other as they are in Taris.

Education
On the island of Taris the citizen are limited to their knowledge and education. Education
In both Taris and The community education is limited and in some cases restricted. On Taris citizens are taught to be illiterate and receive inaccurate imitations of their history, whilst never gaining simple life skills learned in the real world. In The Community education of the past is nonexistent, students are taught to read and write but are not taught how to feel and show emotions.

3. Control
In Taris very much like The community, control plays a very big part in citizens daily lives. There is no freedom or responsibility allowed and is often looked down upon.

1. emotions and relationships:
on Taris, citizens can form romantic relationships and marriages within their learning stratums, and often display their emotions in their actions and reactions when about their daily lives. Whereas in the Community, citizens do not posses emotions, and therefore can not form romantic relationships. Citizens on Taris have relationships that consist of feelings of duty and obligation.
2. Jobs and occupations: In the Community, each child has been observed over the course of their lives and from these observations, the government selects a job for them. However on Taris each citizen can chose an apprenticeship, so that they can study under an elder to learn their desired job, then they take the job when the elder dies. Unlike the Community, the government does not have a say in the occupation of a citizen, whereas they have full control in the Community.
3. Death as a concept: In the Community, 'death' does not exist. Loss and mourning can't be experienced as people are simply 'released to elsewhere'- nowhere in the novel are citizens explicitly informed about what it really means to 'die'. In the community, babies are killed if they're not healthy enough, and similarly to Taris, people that disrupt the balance of society with their opinions are often subtly killed or 'released to elsewhere'. On Taris, death as a concept was accepted and understood, and it was chosen by elderly citizens, or because somebody was unwell, or because they were secretly murdered by the government. But deceased citizens are mourned, as citizens have emotions.

Surveillance of citizens
There is extreme constant surveillance in The Giver and the citizens are to obey expectations. Whereas on Taris, one's actions is spread around the town through gossip within the citizens, it is a form of communication.

Control of citizens
Baldness is used as a symbol of control since they (GC) don't allow hair to be grown on Taris. This destroys the individuality of each person on the island. Although the people in The Giver aren't bold, they still have expectations to follow which ALSO destroys individuality. The community is controlled by the 'Elders', and the Governance Companiance control Taris. In both places, the natural world is completely banished.

Death as a concept
In The Giver, death is non-existent. Instead they call it "being released to Elsewhere", but the citizens don't know the true meaning of it. Emotions cannot be felt in the community, therefore the citizens cannot feel grief, loss or pain. On Taris, death is known as a concept and is understood by everyone. Death is chosen only if elderly citizens were ready to pass on, or because someone was extremely sick, or someone was believed to be secretly assassinated by the GC because of their actions.

Individuality:
In both Taris and 'The Community' people are not able to express themselves or show individuality due to the higher powers who control their every move. To limit differences and inequality, all freedom and choice was taken away from the citizens by making everyone wear the same thing and look the same. On Taris people are forced to shave their heads whereas in the Community they are allowed to grow their hair. Similarly citizens have been raised and were born with specific characteristics to limit individuality in people, although on Taris characteristics are chosen when they choose the biological parents and in the giver, they are given shots so that remain all the same.

Protagonists:
There is one main protagonist in each of the texts. In Juno of Taris it is Juno and in 'The Giver', it is Jonas. These characters are very important as they reveal secrets that have been haunting each of their society's for many, many years. They are both rebellious and non-compliant to the rules that are set for them, striving to find the truth and release all the bad, this makes them very similar. In contrast to Jonas from the Giver, Juno is a young teen who is trying to dethrone the Governance Companions, especially Hilto, by proving what they have been doing and trying to find out the truth abut Taris's past.

Environment:

1. Knowledge of the past
On Taris, there is knowledge of the past but all of it is not accurate. But, in "The Giver" everyone is has no knowledge of the pass because it has been taken away from them. They are similar because the past has an immense impact on what is happening in the present.
2. Individuality
In both of them something has been taken away from the citizens, but what is taken away is different. Hair must be shaven off on Taris, whereas in the community they are not able to see colour. On Taris, everyone is told that they must wear tunics and in the community you must wear your assigned clothes.
3. Babies
Babies were to be healthy and strong to be able to survive and live in the community. If the baby is not, then the baby is to be released elsewhere. On the other hand, babies were to have the perfect genetic picked out by the government.

1. Control of Citizens
There is an excessive amount of governmental on both Taris and in The Community. In Taris and The Community, citizens are restricted from doing certain things. In both, citizens have a recreation hour, which is their only hour of free time in which they are not learning or working. Even in this hour, they are restricted from doing certain things. In both, the government also controls what they eat, what they wear, etc.

2. Individuality
In The Community, citizens are restricted from expressing their individuality through clothing, freedom of speech and everything is chosen for them. Similarly in Taris, the restrictions are the same although they have to have their heads shaved, unlike in the Giver.

3. Similarly, in the Community, affection is not to be shown and their interaction between them is limited.

Likewise in Juno of Taris the citizens are also controlled on where they go to and what they do. A similarity in both Taris and The Giver is that they can't speak their mind and ask questions about where they live.

Surveillance of citizens
In The Giver the community is under 24/7 surveillance and are being watched in their own home's.

1. Education

In Taris it is said they are taught that their land has been lies about the land such as that it has been up and running for 200 years, which explains that the citizens on Taris can not have the correct definition of what has happened in the past where as, In The Giver, they have no knowledge about the past and that's why Jonas is striving to cross the border to get those memories back for the whole of The Community. In the contrary both of the lands have no true knowledge about their past and this relates to education by the study of History.

2. Isolation

In Taris there isolation makes sure that the citizens can't exit the island and that is held by an artificial dome. This is so that they have no contact to the "outside" and the resources they have In The Giver, they also have a dome but there is a different purpose towards it. Rather than keeping in the citizens its more for keeping in the memories of the past. This relates to Isolation by how both, The Giver and Juno of Taris, are held from whats beyond they know.

3. Genetics

1 ) Control of citizens
On Taris, citizens were controlled by the government, and they occasionally visited/monitored the people to see what they were doing. However, in the community (The Giver) they had little to no choice. They were monitored daily, and the Government had absolute control over the people.
2 ) Individuality
On Taris, people had different skins, different features, but no one talked about it. People wore tunics but each person wore it differently. However in the Giver, everyone was chosen to wear what the Government tells them to wear. Everyone looked almost the same and there were no diversity in culture.
3 ) Genetics
On Taris and the Giver, genetics are chosen by the government and them only. They choose the parents and more than half of the time, its not their biological child. In the Giver, no child is theirs. The 'Birthmother' gives birth to the children and the government assigns the 'parents' for that particular child.
