Having parents with Indian and Chinese backgrounds, yet growing up in Canada created a curiosity for diverse people. I was quite introverted and enjoyed spending time alone drawing, painting, making things and creating with different materials. However, as I became an adolescent, my Asian parents pushed me to focus on math and science rather than the arts. My first job after completing my undergraduate in microbiology was in Madagascar in 1997. My aim was to while learn and connect with the local medical health care system. She helped created complementary health care clinics that connected traditional healers with conventional medical resident doctors from the University of Toronto. I found ways to combine art and science for the first time. I taught English to local doctors and nurses, art to rural villages and made music with local artists. It was the most remarkable experience of my life, I felt completely free. In 2011, I was the artist in resident for an International School in China, while also teaching EAL, Music, Math and Science. I don't take it seriously, I just like to play...with decor, with food, with makeup, with arrangements, with nature, with words....and I have always kept myself busy with some sort of an artistic outlet. When I was younger, I used to make jewelry and spend my summers selling it in farmers' markets. I also love shopping at thrift stores and finding treasures to work with...clothes to reimagine, canvases to cover, books to explore. 
Halloween is an especially delightful time for creativity to flourish. Creativity-fostering teachers provide a model of creative behaviour and reinforce it, and protect "creative pupils from conformity pressure." 
The strategies discussed are idea-generating models and I wonder about the creative actions that could transpire after a class has come up with such a discussion, noting that the techniques covered were  narrow in their methods. (i.e. oral/written) 
HMIE, 2006: Emerging Good Practice in Promoting Creativity. Exploring the question, 'What is creativity?' within an educational setting, teachers were asked to discuss how "creativity linked with other aspects of cognitive development".
Some "argued that very young children were particularly creative because they saw the world in fresh and unconstrained ways. Others argued that creativity flourished once a discipline was mastered..." 
It would be interesting to further dissect the multi dimensional aspect of creativity and to explore what it means to each of us as educators, as we work with such a wide breadth of cognitive development within a single school setting. (i.e. early learners up to pre-teens) 
When it comes to cultivating creativity, I also think about the dualities of expectations and lack of pressure, of exposure or revelation and anonymity, of freedom and practise.

My mom would buy me these little notebooks where I kept all my ideas, lists and drawings. My creativity peeked when I had children...maybe it's all the theme birthday parties I've had to plan or the parent how-to books about raising "well-rounded kids."
