Bachelors of Science in Mathematics

Confused between software engineering and Mathematics I ended up doing my bachelors in Mathematics. These four years were challenging but full of learning. As I studied mathematics in depth, I realised it's a never ending journey of exploration. It gets more complex and addicting as you dive deeper into it. I was amazed to see the thinking process of some of the greatest mathematicians and the theories they came up with.

During my bachelors degree and even after graduation, I taught mathematics to students from different grades and different schools. It was an opportunity to revisit basic concepts of Mathematics as I learned about the complex ones. Being a Maths teacher was never my aim nor I was intentionally working towards that. I taught because I liked to work and being independent since a very young age. It used to give me a sense of achievement. After graduation, I was looking for a full time job but I never applied for a teaching job. Many of friends were working in the education sector as Math teachers but I was never drawn to that. I worked in different positions at different organisations within my country.

In Jan 2020, I went for my first interview for the position of a Maths assistant teacher. For the first six months, I worked as an assistant teacher Maths (Year 2 and 3) under the supervision of an amazing teacher who inspired me and introduced me to a new way of teaching Mathematics. I learned about inquiry based learning, differentiated learning, activity based learning, how students can take control of their learning, and how constantly making connections to the real world can initiate interest and curiosity in little minds. I was enjoying this new perspective to Mathematics. I felt as if I had gone back to school and was playing with numbers. After six months the session ended and I was offered to teach mathematics to Year 2 and 3 as the main teacher for the upcoming session. I took it as a challenge. So far it's going great. I'm still learning, experimenting with, and implementing new approaches to teaching mathematics.

My Thoughts

As a maths teacher, I learn something new everyday. Although I did my bachelors in Mathematics, but it feels like I am studying it all over again. Sometimes while introducing a new concept to my class and listening to their ideas and the strategies they come up with while solving a math problem makes me look at that concept from a different perspective.
