He reluctantly allows Evelina into the world independent of his guidance, but seems to have confidence in her judgement, and it will strengthen with time. 

The positioning of Mr. Villars as older and a clergyman contrasts him with many of the young male characters and their motivations throughout the text. As an older figure, he is fatherly and wiser than his young counterparts. As a clergyman, he is assumed to be virtuous and pious, without alterior motive. 

74: in part, Mr. Villars age and position as clergyman make him an ideal or framework for a future husband--Evelina states herself that she hopes Lord Orville might one day resemble him. 

126: Mr. Villars swore that Evelina should "know no father, but [himself], or her acknowledged husband."
