As an older figure, he is fatherly and wiser than his young counterparts. As a clergyman, he is assumed to be virtuous and pious, without alterior motive.

74: in part, Mr. Villars age and position as clergyman make him an ideal or framework for a future husband--Evelina states herself that she hopes Lord Orville might one day resemble him.

126: Mr. Villars swore that Evelina should "know no father, but [himself], or her acknowledged husband." Here again we see a comparison being drawn between Mr. Villars and potential suitors.

One of the more disturbing examples of this is the "robbery" that takes place (139-154)

With these in mind, one of the questions that emerges is whether or not the depiction of Madame Duval as an independent woman colors the treatment she receives from men in the novel, or opinions they may have of her? Further, do the female characters in the novel echo similar sentiments/judgements of her?
