Emer
I did this last year. When students came across new words, they were asked to write them in their Bilingual Dictionaries. The other students used Accelerated Dictionaries which meant that they found a synonym for the word and thus increased their vocabulary. It is time consuming but good if you can get them into the habit - I would recommend having it as a Google Doc as opposed to my little blue books.

Every lesson we conducted private reading at the start of class and then picked discussion questions to talk to our partners about what we had read. I encouraged speaking in their mother tongue but then responding to the class in English.
We also created Bilingual Dictionaries for the class novel.

This is a great tool to make texts more accessible. It also has built in tools like a vocabulary quiz. It's easy to plug in articles or passages from texts we're using and can be really helpful in promoting that academic vocabulary acquisition.

- Put a sentence with an error on the board (I’m driving across the country with three small children which is going to be stressful.)

for students to figure out the error and correct as an everyday warm-up/introductory ritual. Difficulty and relevance based on the grade level and/or the unit at hand.

- Proverbs, idioms, colloquialisms translated from the non-English language to figure out whether there is an equivalent in English. Presented in the same manner as the one above, each for 5-7 min. including discussions and guesses. (This not only overtly acknowledges the language and the culture of origin of the BML but it also reinforces the concept of metaphorical representation. Plus expansion in lexicon in the target language.)

- Exploration of sounds in the mother tongue that do not exist in English (Turkish 'ğ' or 'ı') or vice versa (English 'th' as in "there" and "fourth", these sounds are usually nightmares for Turkish speakers.) This is not just for phonetic accuracy and fluency, again it acknowledges the non-English culture/language and provides a chance for deliberately hearing and producing those unfamiliar sounds. Teacher has to be willing to try producing the non-English sounds. So, largely an empathy exercise really.

Break the Google Monopoly on Translate and try out DeepL. A lot of students, especially BMLs who use a character based language like Chinese, have found that this translator is more accurate. It's trained using a larger and more academic corpora than Google.

I have set up a Read Theory group for all of my Grade 11 classes. I sent the invite out to all but have strongly encouraged BML students that I identified early on. (I did a quick writing / intro activity at the beginning of the year which gave me some insight into students' writing abilities and experience of English. I have used this to target specific students.) I now need to find out how to manage/encourage/keep up with progress!
