This reveals that the party knows how to keep the proles control while giving them some freedom. Winston feels that the proles are the only hope to overpower the party. He remembers his wife who forced  him to have sex because it was their “duty to the party,” but she left him once they failed to produce a child.This reveals that the party’s attitude towards sex should not be pleasurable. It should only occur between married people for the purpose of producing a child. Party members are not allowed to feel or express their desire for one another. Winston feels disgusted by the party’s policy, and rebels against it.
