He talks about if life would have better before or after the revolution. Winston also talks about the founding fathers of the party and how they all disappeared besides Big Brother, Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford. These 3 founding members of the party were arrested For Showing against the Big Brother. This reveals that the founding members of the party feared something about the party or how it was going and that they were able to make up stories in order to trick the people into believing it was real. Winston felt as though whatever the party said about more food and better housing could not be believed but wasn't provable or disprovable.

In this passage, Winston wrote about how the proles have a lot more freedom than they think. He explains that the proles can take over the party whenever they want because they can easily outnumber the party. Winston talked about the working conditions of the proles before the Revolution. In his diary, he copied a passage of a children's history textbook which explains the history before the Revolution. This reveals that the party knows how to keep the proles control while giving them some freedom. Winston feels that the proles are the only hope to overpower the party. He worries that the proles will remain ignorant to the party. He yearns for the proles to stand up and fight back.

This passage explains the logic and concept behind Newspeak, the language that will replace Oldspeak (plain Old English). This reveals that the Party is trying to dumb down society to strip away the people's ability to rebel. As a result, Winston is worried that Syme, the one currently writing the 11th edition of the Newspeak dictionary, will be vaporized since he is too intelligent.

In this passage Winston writes in his diary about the encounterment he had with a prostitute; which is considered a crime. He remembers his wife who forced him to have sex because it was their “duty to the party,” but she left him once they failed to produce a child. This reveals that the party’s attitude towards sex should not be pleasurable. It should only occur between married people for the purpose of producing a child. Party members are not allowed to feel or express their desire for one another. Winston feels disgusted by the party’s policy, and rebels against it.
