Rather than being your average boy keeping up with all the sports and news, Charles was interested in more scientific and important points in time. He didn't care so much for what was happening and didn't really pay attention to what most people found interesting and noted in daily life. "In 1942,I was unaware that a gallon of gas cost fifteen cents, and that a loaf of bread cost nine, and certainly didn't know that the Dow Jones average hit .107 in the sandlot games at liberty Heights, even though I had prayed for better batting to Our Lady of Lourdes, the namesake of the parish school that was half a mile from home. To make a good hitter out of someone with my hand-eye coordination would have taken a miracle of Lourdes." (Page 8)

And he very much loved Babe Ruth who didn't play for Baltimore but was from Baltimore.
"A Major cause of my boyhood happiness was baseball, which in the forties glowed in a way that has vanished from American life. I will never forget the particular sweetness of being outdoors in twilight in Baltimore, a sweetness known in the days before air-conditioning from Baltimore to St. Louis, near open windows. Because all the Baltimore fans were tuned into the same game on WBAL, I was able to stroll down Edgewood Road and follow all the action without missing a pitch." Yet to their surprise they had both been spanked and his sister wasn't happy about it. "That evening, in a doubleheader, the two of us were spanked. My spanking for having been a two-bit Zorro was understandable; and I would even have understood a spanking for coloring my stomach before Sunday dinner. But a overkill, even though that word didn't exist in 1942. 'That spanking was just unfair,' she said to me the next day. 'It sure was, ' I replied. ' Mom didn't even ask the American Sugar people if we were bothering them.' 'I think we should teach her a lesson,' she said. ' What do you think she'd like to learn?' 'Let's run away!'" They had no other choice but to keep eachother warm which seemed to work. "Like two small criminals, we walked on in search of sanctuary. By now it was dark and we were starting to shiver from the cold. To keep our morale, I began a little routine that, for no particular reason, Mary Ann and I liked to do from time to time: I gallantly presented my right arm to her..." (Page 78)

Such as third graders with fourth graders. Well Charles had known more more than most and was very smart, he taught himself at home and his mother was harsh on him about learning too. She would quiz him and make him study. Although he did all of that studying he stilled loved the radio and at times chose to listen instead of do his work which didn't please his mom very much. In our time most people would classify him as a nerd, but back then such a classification didn't exist. Not to mention if it did ninety nine percent of the school's student population would be called nerds. Back then every student sat polite and obeyed what the teacher had to say. No one knew otherwise. It is only now that people speak out. And then everyone learned all the teacher had to say like the location of France, but now people find much of this information optional.

Charles love for baseball was also in company with his father who was a salesman and knew the manager of his favorite baseball team.

A lot of days Charles and Mary Ann loved to do a particular thing. And that was call people. Although it might sound odd they found much pleasure in calling people who had no idea who they were. Even though Charles didn't know it in the moment, he later realized that a lot of these calls were actually building his communication skills. If he had kept calling people and stayed on the route of calls he could have become a telemarketer. And would have made a nickel a call. Adding onto this one of their favorite places to call was the sugar factory. This was because their number and the factories number were very similar and they believed it made sense to keep in touch with them. One of the days their mother caught them and although was a fast thinker and knew what to say it didn't end very well for them.

A lot of the time Charles spent writing cursive. At school at home everywhere. In that time writing might as well had been the most important thing to know how to do correctly. Everything seemed to revolve around writing. And although Charles indeed knew how to write in cursive with no fail, people at school didn't. Not everyone of course, but for sure there was one and he stuck. He stuck because Charles spent many days explaining to him the difference between the number two and Q. Which he could not differentiate.

This moment took place in a very good year in Autumn. The moment was not a crazy event yet to Charles it was. And this moment took place one day when Charles went out to water his victory garden and had spotted some green sprouting from his garden. What it was Charles could have no less of an idea of, but he was happy. He was excited to have grown something anything. Whether it was strawberries, watermelon or anything else, he didn't care. All that mattered to him was that if his garden had a chance that meant that America still had a chance at winning the ever so long ongoing war.

Looking back Charles knew that his ninth year of living on this Earth was the best for him. The year that he had all his life changing memories and events. The girl he liked. He would look back and be happy. He would many times associate his life with a famous song from Sinatra.
