He's not a true military man and appears to be somewhere in the hierarchy of nobility as he has land that he will sell in order to "fill his purse" with money. (Which Iago eventually "bobs" for himself.) Roderigo is also very gullible and allows Iago to lead him on constantly. This character is mostly a static character, but has a tendency to be almost dynamic because he is slowly becoming more dissatisfied with Iago. By Act 4, scene 3, Roderigo is ready to give up on Desdemona and go back to Venice, but Iago persuades him to try one more time for Des, and so Roderigo agrees to help kill Cassio. In Act 5, Scene 1, when Roderigo ambushes Cassio, it all goes wrong; Roderigo fails to kill Cassio but is wounded BY Cassio. He punishes himself for the things he had done out of ignorance. Throughout the play he allows himself to be a victim of Iago’s manipulation leading to him killing his one love. This was enough heartbreak for him to kill himself.
