Describing an audiogram by Kristina Blaiser

Being able to describe an audiogram is an important part of helping individuals and families understand hearing loss. It is good to practice this using jargon-free language (with examples). Here's your chance!! At the end of the week I will post one and then you can compare what you did and what I did to see what you (and I) can do to keep improving our skills!

Watching mine back, I realized that I could have spoken a litter slower and gone into more detail explaining the results of this specific audiogram. I explained the basics of what the axises mean and how pitch and loudness are measured, as well as examples of what the numbers indicate. I also ended with what kind of hearing loss the results demonstrate, however I should have taken it a step further and been more specific about what the individual would and would not be able to hear. This was a good learning experience of not being afraid of going into too much detail.

I recorded as if I were talking with a parent online and tried to make it as simple and sweet as possible while explaining things. Looking back, I think it would have been nice to show the speech banana and Audiogram side by side so that the parent could see other sounds that the child could and could not hear while I went through each pitch. I also had planned on using more of the Seattle Hospital's document (first speech banana) to show normal ranges before diving in. Nerves got the better of me. Maybe it's for the best since I went a little long. It has been a while since I have looked at Audiograms, so I hope that I interpreted this correctly!

I was surprised at how many takes this short video required! It was challenging to present all of the information in a concise and simple manner. In real life, I would love to also be able to address the patient's individual concerns or the reason they had the testing done. For example, if this patient was having trouble hearing his wife I would have provided more information about the speech banana and where speech sounds fall on this graph. After reviewing my video, I think there is certainly room to make examples more relevant to the person I am speaking with. Specifically, not everyone knows what a jig brake is or sounds like. I will continue trying to find the balance of providing too much vs. not enough info :-)

Kat Kalili - I attempted to present as if meeting virtually with an adult client who was unfamiliar with audiograms but was diagnosed with a moderate hearing loss. Unfortunately, after reviewing my video, I realized the viewers can't see my mouse as it moves around the screen and references what I'm talking about, so I apologize for that! I would make sure that was visible if virtually presenting to a client. Looking back, I may want to change the order I present different audiograms. Instead of starting with their report that clearly shows their hearing loss, I might start with the audiogram that references common environmental and speech sounds, then quickly show a generic audiogram with normal hearing, and then end with their own to compare the difference. This might make the information more clear, as well as show some sensitivity to their feelings about the results they've been given and how it's currently impacting their life.

I definitely rushed through my video a little bit and should have been more engaging (as if I were speaking to an actual parent). I also could have done a better job explaining how the audiogram relates to speech other than my detail about typical conversational decibel level. I think it would have been helpful to have a picture of the speech banana and walk through that with a parent. I also glossed over the part where the child's hearing was slightly below normal limits. If I was a parent, I would definitely have wanted more information/clarification for that part.

I think it would have helped to show where the child's hearing was based on the more detailed audiogram that I showed them.

I did not rehearse this and I think I would have been more clear trying it again. My tendency was to say um while thinking and moving to the next thing I wanted to say, and over all I felt less professional than I would like to come across. And while I understand dB reading hearing loss, I need to find another way to describe it more succinctly. During the recording, I felt like I was tripping over that description. I also think that I picked a poor audiogram to demonstrate with because there was not more obvious hearing loss and no difference between each ear, which can have a great impact on a child when they are learning language. I also found that technology took my attention away from the client (when I used the mouse to mark the areas) and that definitely impacted how personable I came across during the discussion. Personally, while I know tele therapy is here to stay, I really do enjoy being in person with the client more than directing information via zoom because of the technical challenges. It took me more time to find a screen capturing app that would record audio and save than it did to do the assignment, and that makes me a little sad. Overall, great experience and I secretly hope we have to do this again so I can get better at it.
