Prenatal factors: Low birth weight, premature birth, Genetic disorders, etc.

Perinatal factors: Birth complications, neonatal infections, low Apgar scores.

Neurological factors: Cerebral palsy, brain abnormality, microcephaly.

Environmental risk factors: Poverty, lack of access to healthcare, family instability, lack of resources, low parental education.

-Caregiver factors: Postpartum depression, mental health issues, substance abuse, child neglect, domestic violence, etc.

-Environmental exposures: Lead exposure, air pollution, exposure to toxins, etc.

-Stimulation Factors: lack of appropriate stimulation, limited interaction including language interaction, poor quality childcare.

It is important to consider early intervention and early identification of any risk factors. Each child is legally allowed to receive individualized and personalized support if needed. Family involvement and collaboration is also very important.

• Financial hardships-Medical bills or medical care, transportation, childcare costs. Parents' work participation may be affected, which can lead to unemployment.

• Social Impact-social isolation or feeling unwelcome.

• Family dynamics-Higher likelihood of divorce or separation among parents. Siblings are also impacted as their relationship with their family may change.

Positive:

• Parental growth, both personal and social.

• Stronger family bond

• Increased appreciation for life-We learn to look at the positives.

• Increased knowledge-Expanding one's knowledge of disabilities teaches us new ways to adapt.

• Expanded social net worth - Connecting with other families and developing friendships and relationships with families experiencing similar hardships.

• Positive impact on the community-Other Individuals surrounding a community will also benefit from interacting with a child or family who has children with disabilities.

Join us on Monday, September 30th for our first monthly community potluck from 5-6 pm. Please choose a dish from the list provided in your student's folder. This fun event allows families to get to know one another. This also allows us to connect with our local community. Families can also dive into learning what happens in the classrooms by meeting the teachers!

I will host monthly events like the one listed above to promote family engagement. This allows families to come together in a fun and simple way. Who doesn't love food!

• Play is very important for the first two years of your child's development. Play allows your child to use their imagination. They also allow you to learn about your child's interests and strengths.

• Conversations/Communication-Speaking to your child regularly allows them to visually see how you pronounce words. Asking them how they feel and modeling expressing yourself through communication also promotes a healthy and supportive relationship.

• Reading- Whether a bedtime story or simply taking the time to read to your child, reading is another way to promote language and communication.

• Routine-These are crucial in the early stages of 0–2 years. They also allow your child to have consistency and an understanding of what is coming next. Routines promote confidence, self-control, bonding, and independence.
