Talk about what you have learned regarding the Spanish language and culture.

What things are you now able to express in Spanish that you have learned in Spanish II (concepts)?

There are many things I am now able to express in Spanish that I have learned in Spanish II. I have learned the vocabulary for all of the lessons. This vocabulary encompasses the topics of my school, my home/apartment, food, shopping, my family, free time, etc. Along with these vocabulary words, I learned many new grammar concepts. I reviewed regular conjugation I learned in Spanish I. I also learned conjugation in the present, preterite, imperfect, and progressive tenses. I also reviewed irregular conjugations in all tenses studied. In Spanish II practiced listening, reading, writing, and speaking in the ways I was asked with the concepts I have learned. I learned how to tell the difference between preterite and imperfect tenses, and learned how and when to use these tenses. Overall, I learned a lot in Spanish II and hope to retain this information that could greatly benefit me in the future!

¡Mi viaje a España fue increíble! Aprendí muchas cosas nuevas y vi una nueva cultura. La escuela en España fue divertida y diferente. Mi escuela no era muy grande. Mi clase favorita era la clase de historia. Mi profesor fue fácil pero muy divertido. Por lo general, teníamos que tomar notas para la tarea. La clase y la información fue muy interesante. Mi clase menos favorita era matemáticas. Era aburrido y, a veces, difícil, especialmente de prueba. Pero, mi profesor de matemáticas era agradable. Tomamos notas aquí también, y la tarea fue pesada. La clase de español fue difícil a veces debido a la cantidad de trabajo. Pero, me encanta aprender español. Mi maestra fue la mejor porque me ayudó a aprender. La clase de baile también fue una de mis clases favoritas porque fue muy entretenida. Mi profesora de baile estaba muy contenta. La clase de inglés fue útil pero pesada. Mi profesor fue enérgico. Escribimos trabajos y tomamos pruebas. La química era una clase difícil, pero escuché. Teníamos que hacer cálculos matemáticos por problemas y aprender sobre las personas. Mi profesor era muy exigente pero inteligente.

Mi apartamento en España era muy bonito y me sentí como en casa! Tenía paredes rojas y muebles grises. Viví con mi familia anfitriona en el apartamento. Tenía cinco pisos de altura y vivíamos en la habitación. ¡Tenía una pequeña piscina y una vista de Barcelona! Barcelona es hermoso. Era importante para mi familia anfitriona y para mí limpiar el apartamento. Todos éramos tareas asignadas. Para limpiar el departamento utilicé muchas cosas. Por ejemplo, para el piso, utilicé la escoba y el recogedor. Barrí el suelo con la escoba. Para limpiar la mesa, tuve que limpiarla con jabón y paño. Después de que estaba limpio, puse la mesa. Después de comer, lavé los platos en el lavaplatos. Para lavar mi ropa, utilicé la lavadora y secadora. Puse detergente para limpiar la ropa. Después de que estuvieran limpios, los planché. Limpié el baño con cloro y una esponja. Limpié mi cuarto con el plumero. Entonces, hice la cama. Finalmente, arreglé la sala de estar. Trabajamos juntos para mantener el apartamento agradable. ¡Me sentí como en casa mientras vivía en España!

¡Mi familia anfitriona en España fue muy amigable y divertida! El nombre de mi padre en España era Eduardo. Es muy tímido pero decidido. Tiene 52 años y trabaja como abogado en Barcelona. El nombre de mi madre en España era Sofía. Ella fue tan divertida y amable cuando fui allí. Ella tiene 46 años y trabaja como maestra de cuarto grado. El nombre de mi hermano anfitrión era Juan. Era muy divertido y como un verdadero hermano. Él tiene 17 años y es un estudiante de secundaria en la escuela secundaria. El nombre de mi hermana anfitriona era Isabella. Ella era tan dulce e inocente. Ella tiene solo 10 años y casi termina con la escuela primaria. ¡Mi familia anfitriona hablaba muchos idiomas! Sabían hablar tres idiomas, por ejemplo, mi padre era alemán y portugués. Hablaba más portugués. Mi madre también era alemana. Cuando tenía 15 años, viajó a Alemania para visitar a su familia y amigos. Ella sabe algo de alemán pero habla principalmente español. Mi hermano en España habla francés porque lo aprendió en la escuela. Sus antepasados también son de Francia. Mi hermana en españa habla un poco de ruso. Es muy loco para mí escuchar eso. ¡Extraño y amo mucho a mi familia anfitriona en España!

What differences have you seen between the Spanish language and your native language?

I have seen many differences between the Spanish language and my native language - English. One difference between the two would be the alphabet. The Spanish language uses the Latin alphabet and the vowels take an accept, and it had additional letters. But, the English alphabet has different vowels than the Spanish. Letters in the alphabets make completely different sounds (in most cases). Another difference is the punctuation. In Spanish, punctuation is sometimes in front of a sentence, like an upside down exclamation point and question mark. In English, the punctuation like that is at the end of sentences. Finally, the verb uses and tenses are more inflected in Spanish than English. The way that verbs are conjugated is much different compared to the English language in the sense that the different tenses and forms match up.

What did you find interesting and exciting about the Spanish culture?

I found many aspects of Spanish culture is interesting and exciting. I learned about education in Spain, and how it’s different from my own culture! Many schools in Spain still require students to wear uniforms, which is similar to some places in the United States, but it was unexpected. Also, I learned about the interesting aspects of Spanish architecture. Apparently, Spain is the country with the second highest amount of buildings on the list, beaten only by Italy - that’s crazy! Bullfighting in Spain is something I find exciting, it is a traditional event and its history can be traced as far as ancient Greece and Rome. Finally, I found the currency exciting and interesting. The paper currency of Spain featured the King of Spain as well as historical figures such as Christopher Columbus. While so many aspects of Spanish culture is interesting and excited, these are some of the things that stood out to me!

What do you hope to learn if you continue to study the Spanish language?

If I continue to study the Spanish language, I hope to learn exactly how to interact with people in everyday life. I want to be able to have fluent conversations with natives or people who are also fluent without having to think so hard… While I realize this may be a farfetched goal, I feel as if I kept working at it it would be possible! I would hope to learn more verb tenses, conjugation techniques, and vocabulary words. Also, to broaden my knowledge of the Spanish culture.

Talk about your experience with learning Spanish in an online class.

Learning Spanish online was such a different experience compared to learning it face-to-face, in class. This learning style is more challenging in the sense that we, as students, can’t slack off because the strict deadlines will not be changed. We have to learn to manage time according to these due dates and guidelines. Also, actually learning the material was difficult in the fact that I had to make sure I was understanding what was going on. If I didn’t understand, it was important that I ask questions, because this fast-moving course does not have time to stay back and help one student. We had to be able to incorporate everything we have learned in each lesson and using notes to help us keep everything together. While, to me, this learning style is much more difficult, it is efficient in its purpose. In this class, we did have to speak a lot, but not as much as a face-to-face environment, which can be detrimental to some students. It didn’t bother me as much, but I will say I had a better understanding of the Spanish I topics - but this could be because they’re not as difficult. Ms. DeBord was a phenomenal online teacher because she was constantly engaged in the well being and the learning of her students, which helped me a lot in this course.

What did you like about the course? What did you not like and/or could be improved?

I liked how everything was really organized and I could find what I needed to find. At first, all the modules were very confusing and intimidating, but as the semester went on I adjusted and learned the organization style. I also liked the many opportunities for extra credit. I like how the teachers/creators understood that this is a difficult course, and we care about our grade, so the extra credit was a boost that would help us learn while also giving us some extra points. I did not like all of the writing and the final projects, but I understand that this is essential to the understanding of the topics.

What things did you do that helped you learn Spanish in this course? What things can you do to improve your own Spanish learning in the future?

I did a few things during this course to help me learn Spanish. One thing I did was take thorough notes. These notes helped me with the writing assignments, speaking assignments, and projects. They helped me elaborate on my answers for these assignments and writing the notes helped the information stay in my brain. To improve my own Spanish learning in the future, I could try to be more engaged in the live classes and the note-taking. Since I have to balance 6 other classes, I was not as engaged in this class and the learning, but more so finishing the assignments. But, I do like how I learned a lot even when I worked on things!

What things did your teacher do to help you with your learning? Was there anything that your teacher didn't do that would have helped you?

My teacher helped me with my learning in many ways! I could text her at almost any time and she would answer with a thorough paragraph explaining the answer to my question, and more. She always gave amazing feedback and notes to make sure I understood what was wrong with my answers, or if I needed to fix something WHY I needed to fix it, not just fix it. No, there wasn't anything my teacher didn't do that would have helped me. I feel as if she helped me as much as possible, and made me feel okay to ask questions. Some teachers make students feel dumb for asking questions, but I never felt that way!

¡Tenía muchas aficiones en España! Una de las primeras cosas que hice fue ir a una corrida de toros. Además, hubo muchas fiestas allí! Fuimos a una pequeña fiesta comunitaria, bailamos y comimos mucha comida. También fui al centro comercial con mis amigos. Compramos recuerdos y ropa. Jugué fútbol y waterpolo con mis amigos también. Bailamos y escuchamos música española. Mi favorito era el reggaeton y la cumbia. Además, solía escuchar merengue y salsa con mis amigos. Cuando estaba en casa, jugaba con mascotas! En España, mi familia tenía muchos tipos de mascotas. Teníamos dos perros, sus nombres eran Macho y Gonzo. Además, había dos vacas y una cabra. Mi familia en España vendió muchas otras vacas y cabras en el pasado. Me divertí mucho en España.

La comida en España fue increíble! Probé muchos alimentos nuevos. ¡Experimenté la cultura de España a través de la comida! Lo primero que probé fue la famosa Paella, ¡estaba deliciosa! Aprendí que la comida española no es lo mismo que la comida mexicana. Los mercados en España también son muy interesantes. En el mercado en España, compré muchas cosas. Compré algunas frutas como manzanas, plátanos y fresas. También compré algo de pollo y carne para la cena. Finalmente, compré sándwiches para el almuerzo. La gente era amable y servicial cuando vieron que estaba confundido. Me gustaba comprar en el mercado por la diversidad que veía. Además, la gente era amigable y divertida para hablar. Tenían mucha comida sana allí. Comía alimentos saludables para mantener la salud. Comía frutas y verduras con cada comida. Cosas como manzanas, bananas, ensaladas y brócoli me ayudaba a mantenerme saludable. Los carbohidratos y la fibra también eran importantes para mi dieta. En conclusión, la comida en España fue increíble y la extraño mucho.

Mis experiencias de compras en España fueron geniales. Además, mi comunidad fue muy agradable. Me fui de vacaciones a Barcelona, Madrid y Sevilla cuando fui a España. Hice muchas actividades divertidas en españa. ¡En Sevilla, compré ropa nueva para baile flamenco en el festival! Allí bailamos y comimos comida local. En Barcelona, fui a nadar en el océano. Compré un traje de baño para eso para que pudiéramos ver el paisaje allí. En Madrid, fui al Palacio Real, así que me vestí con ropa de turista. Fue hermoso, quiero volver. Mi comunidad cuando viajé fue útil durante mis experiencias de compra. Fui a El Corte Inglés muchas veces. Era enorme, y muchas personas estaban allí. Tenía todo lo que quería. Los mercadillos vendían artículos antiguos. Tengo muchos recuerdos para llevar a mi familia y comunidad. Me encantaba viajar a españa.
