While exploring our units this semester, I got the opportunity to engage in discussion and project-based work, which I really enjoyed. In design, we made the Cornell box, in Devising we explored different materials and their uses, and in playwriting, we came up with ideas and stories. Through these projects and through discussions I found some additions were made to my aesthetic and I found passion in genres I hadn't yet fully explored. By working with materials, specifically for the Cornell Box, I learned that I really enjoy working with collage, and I really enjoy that aesthetic. I was also able to get over my apprehension that it is hard or overwhelming to work with by having an outlet to explore it. Through discussion with my peers, I was encouraged to look into phycological horror in movies and TV shows and while doing so I found a director, Mike Flanagan, whom I really admire. I started watching many of the shows and movies he has directed and most are psychological horror and I fell in love with the genre. I love that it isn't gory or bloody, but rather it makes you think and lean in to figure out what's happening and why it's happening. His stories revolve around people and how they think and it launched me into consuming media that is thought-provoking and fascinating to me. This also translated into me trying to make my audience think and wonder in my short script for playwriting and directing. I found a new love as a creator, to inspire the unpredictable and unknown, encouraging the audience to be their own detective.

This semester, while exploring different modules, I have had the opportunity to further get to know my classmates and peers as creatives. Through discussion, I have been able to glimpse into their world and see creative material through their eyes as they communicate their perspective on it. Through these discussions, I have been able to challenge my own thoughts and opinions as well as allow for new insights and ideas that I could not have come up with on my own. Through collaborating with my peers I have learned a little about who I click with, and some of the things I didn't know I valued. For example, I learned that I value confidence in collaborators. I found that occasionally I would get frustrated when a collaborator would say things like “Oh I don't know I am not really an actor so maybe this isn't a good idea” or “Ugh I am just so bad at this XYZ… no guys I’m sorry that was a really bad idea.” I found myself quite frustrated with insecure comments and of course, I would be there to reassure my collaborator, but I found myself wanting to focus on the collaboration and the product more than coddling a team member. I did glean some insight from these experiences though, and I found that I had to remind myself that a good teammate can be there for someone creatively as well as personally, while also finding myself wanting to challenge that person and remind them that they are in a safe space where all ideas are welcome.

Through our modules this semester I have been exposed to many different and interesting new pieces of thought, art, and media. For example, the Tectonic Theatre project reading, Abstract: Christoph Niemann, Manuel Cinema, Thoughts on Collaboration by Kirk Lynn, Artist Soapbox: Collaboration podcast, Pillars of Intimacy, and Far Away by Caryl Churchill. From each of these things as well as our in-class discussions about each I have taken away something meaningful. Collaborating with my classmates allowed me to find valuable insights into each as well as work together in some (like the Manuel Cinema workshop) to share thought-provoking experiences. Some things that stuck with me are the fact that Christoph Niemann refused to show the camera any of his “ordinary” life and his thoughts on the abstract, how in Far Away the reader didn't ever have flat-out answers and was left to figure out the story and meaning for themselves, and in Manuel Cinema just the intense artistry that goes into creating the mind-blowing pieces of art and theatre. All of these things now live with me as an artist and I use them consciously and subconsciously in my work to create art within the classroom and in my everyday life.
