The poem Beowulf, is about a monster named Grendel who upon hearing the celebrations of Herot, attacks and kills thirty of Hrothgar's men. The kingdom of the Danes is attacked by Grendel for twelve years until the Geat's who had heard of the tales of Grendel came to save the Danes. The Geat's brought Beowulf who claimed to be the strongest and bravest man in the World. Beowulf promised the Danes that he and his men would kill Grendel with his bare hands. Beowulf seeks out Grendel and succeeds and defeats Grendel by ripping his body apart with only his hands. The Geat's return to Herot to tell the tale of Beowulf's success and celebrate the defeat of Grendel after twelve years of fear.

When Grendel walked into Herot, the mead-hall, he killed and ate one person. This is similar to how Jesus died on the cross for the greater good of mankind. Grendel is referred to as, "The Almighty's Enemy."(Raffel 344) When Grendel is dying the text says that, "... his days/ Were over, his death near; down/ To hell he would go..."(Raffel 364-366) telling that hell is one of the places that you can be sent for the afterlife. Grendel realizes that he is fighting not only against humans, but against god.

Zachary Villani

The night after Beowulf killed Grendel, Grendel's mother goes to Herot retrieves her son's arm which was hung as a trophy for the rafters. Grendel's mother also kills Horothgar's closest friend then returns to the lake. The next morning Beowulf hears of this and seeks Grendel's mother out. Beowulf leaps into the lake is attacked by Grendel's mother and dragged into her cave. Beowulf tries to hit her with his sword but does not succeed as it does not pierce her skin. In the heat of the battle Beowulf knocks Grendel's mother to the ground and quickly spots a large sword on the wall one that has clearly been crafted by giants. Beowulf grabs the sword and slices Grendel's mother between the shoulder blades. Heavens light shines through the cave and Beowulf spots Grendel in the distance. He slices his head off and returns back to Herot presenting the head as a trophy. The Geats and Danes go back to the Mead Hall and celebrate for the first time in twelve years without fear.
- Ezra
