For children, this concept is important in early childhood development as a child, in the first 3 years of their life, is slowly developing a sense of self, 'transitioning' from their imagination where they feel that they are an independent entity with their mother to the real world outside the child where they realise that they are dependent of others. 

This often can be a stressful and anxiety-inducing period for a child, therefore a comfort object is put in place to help the child cope with this.

For adults, stuffed toys are often significant to them, providing psychological strength and assistance and helping one's capacity of being alone. These toys may be looked to for emotional support in transitional periods such as assimilating into a new area or experiencing trauma or significant loss.
