Pre-Novel Prediction

Based off of the information on the back of the book, I am predicting that this novel will be focused on a world where no one has choice. It will show us the perspective of what it is like to live in a society where you feel like a puppet under the control of a puppeteer, the government. In our country, and in many other countries you have a right to choose many things. Your employment, your country's representative, your husband/wife if you have one, whether you have kids etc. I predict that in this world nobody can make a choice, and nobody has the guts to confront any government official about this lack of choice. We are already introduced to a character Jonas, who is clearly eleven or twelve years old, who lives in this society with no choice. I know that their tasks in life are predetermined, however clearly Jonas is chosen for something special, something different from the rest. To work with The Giver. I predict that the Giver knows why this society has such little choice, the reason and history behind it, and I think that Jonas will eventually ask and find out why everyone in his society is so trapped, and possibly find a way to try and reconcile the situation.

This chapter has introduced a lot of different, and what seems to be important aspects of this book. We have been introduced more to Jonas, the main character. We know that he is an "eleven", and that there is an important event for him and all other "elevens" in December called "The Ceremony of Twelve" that he is feeling excited, nervous and quite apprehensive about. In the first pages Jonas talked about seeing a jet zip through the sky a year prior to present day, and how he felt frightened, but it ended up being a Pilot's mistake.

- Released: Not exactly sure of the meaning yet, but it is considered a grim statement, and a punishment, and an unacceptable phrase to be used when not in a serious matter. The books version of swearing.
- The only time being released isn’t a punishment is when you are releasing an elderly, or releasing a newborn. Releasing a newborn is a sad thing, but not a form of punishment. Releasing an elderly is a sign of of a full life lived, and is a positive thing.
- A rule in society is a family must consist of a mother, a father, one girl and one boy. No acceptions.
- It seems that this society has been de-humanized. They don’t know simple things, for example. what the word “animal” means.

Not too long before present day Jonas was playing catch with Asher using an apple. While they were playing Jonas noticed that the apple changed, for a split second in mid-air but as soon as it was in his hands, it was back to normal.

- In society, it is very rude to point out features of someone that are considered different. For example, Jonas and the new child Gabriel have light, plae eyes, but nobody points it out because it's rude to point out other's differences.
- The don't use color. This is proven in two different scenarios, the first being when talking about eye color. Instead of referring to darker eye as "brown", they just say someone has "dark eyes". The second scenario bein whe Jonas was playing with Asher with the apple. When Jonas catches the apple, he refers to it being the same shade as his tunic. Not specifying that his tunic is red, or that the apple is red, just that they are the same shade.
- You can start volunteering when you become "an eight".
- Mirrors are not forbidden, but very rare.
- Being birthmother is a job with very little honor and isn't an ideal profession, according to Jonas and Lily's mom.

Jonas's mother handed him a pill, which he was decently familiar with as some of his friends took the same pills, but he never knew what they were for. Based on inference, I am going to say that there are no cars in this society.
- When eights start volunteering, they usually do their hours together, in groups of friends working with younger ones.
- There is a rule against bragging. It is not a heavily enforced rule, more something similar to be rude, punishable with being chastised.
- Between being "an eight" and "a twelve" you must complete a certain number of volunteer hours or you will not receive your assignment at the Ceremony of Twelve.
- Jonas has volunteered in many places, not just in one place. Therefore he doesn't have any clue what his assignment will be.
- It seems like they are trying to de-humanize the people i this society as much as they can. They don't even refer to them as "being a baby", "being an elderly person", "being eleven years old" their age category defines them. They are a new child, "a one"- "a twelve", and then when they get old they are "an old" and that is it.

In this chapter, Jonas had a dream that his mother referred to as "a stirring". They never referred exactly to what it was however they did state that he needed "treatment". His mother gave him a pill, which he is now required to take every day for the rest of his life until he reaches The House of the Old. Some of his friends and his parents have already taken these pills, and they say it will eventually become habit and he won't even think about it.
Prediction: I believe that a stirring is a feeling of love, and desire for someone specific. In this society they are trying to de-humanize people, this includes choosing who they start a family unit with (their significant other). If people start to feel love, and desire to have someone, it will be harder for society to control people's family units. I predict that the pill that people are required to take after a stirring, is to supress any feelings of love that they have for someone, and supress anymore dreams and/or thoughts of romantic events with someone.

The woman Jonas is bathing says that The House of the Old "celebrated" a release of a man that morning meaning that releasing an old is really a celebration. The woman says that the man said a speech and many others said a speech, before they "let him go", and he went into the releasing room where he "walked through the door". They say that people usually start to have "stirrings" when they are teenagers, similar to how teenagers start to feel feelings of love towards someone, and start to be in romantic relationships at the age similar to Jonas. As a teenager, I have romantic feelings towards someone, which started when I was twelve, right around Jonas's age. Jonas's romantic feelings may have started different than mine, but I think that he is feeling a romantic feeling towards Fiona, therefore society is having him start the pill to suppress it so they can control who he starts his family unit with.

This chapter is a very important for Jonas and all of the rest of The Elevens. We learn that like all New Children, Jonas received a number at birth, his being 19. This means at the naming ceremony, when he wa just a small new child, he was standing and wide eyed, obviously more developed than the rest of the new children. Also, in this chapter, the Ceremony of Twelve has happened. Each eleven is called up by their number they received at birth and given their assignment, however Jonas wasn't called. His friend, number 18, Fiona was called and given her assignment, and then by default it should have been Jonas called, number 19, however the Chief Elder skipped him and moved on to number 20, Pierre. Jonas was shocked and embarrassed, as was everyone else. He thought that the Chief had to have made a mistake, but the Chief Elder never makes mistake and everyone knew this was entirely purposeful. All Jonas could think is what did he do wrong.

Asher is Jonas's best friend, and he is very well known for his humorous, clueless, and immature behaviour. During the Ceremony of Twelve, it is revealed that Asher has always struggles with proper language, for example when he was just a three he couldn't say "snack" instead he would unintentionally say "smack", he would immediately correct himself, but could never get it right the first time. Every time this would happen he would be smacked, and abused with a "correction stick", even as a small child. It got to a point where he was traumatised and fully stopped speaking for a long while.

The Elder says that "Jonas has not been assigned, he has been selected.", Jonas automatically feels fear and confusion as he is not sure what the Elder is talking about, but she shortly follows with announcing that he has been selected to be the new "Receiver of Memory." The whole crowd is stunned and gasps, clearly knowing that this is a big deal, but Jonas still diesn't know what she is talking about and stands there stunned, worried and confused.

The Elder looks over at the section of Elders, and Jonas notices a bearded man with pale eyes that he has never seen before, clearly being the current Receiver. He works alone and is not well known. The Elder states that all of the Elders have been watching JOnas ever so carefully since he started showing key qualities that were needed to become a Receiver. They are being even more careful as when Jonas was only a toddler, they made a faulty selection for the next Receiver and do not want to experience a failure such as that again. Unlike his other group mates who will be watched, and modified during training, Jonas will be trained completely alone apart from everyone else, except the current Receiver. The Elder says that Jonas will be faced with a magnitude of physical pain that nobody other than the current Receiver can ever fathom to experience, but he seems to show the bravery to endure it. He ultimately feels scared, and debates telling them they have selected wrong, but then he looks at the faces in the crowd, and to the Elder and he knows he has to continue on. He is scared of what he will become and what he will become of him throughout this process but goes through with it in the end.

This phrase is something that seems like such a normal thing, but really has a deeper, and frankly, sadder meaning. By the chief Elder saying this to every child that goes through the Ceremony of Twelve, it obviously signifies that their childhood is over, but also signifies that they never really had a proper childhood that we think of today. Their childhood was never playing with dolls, watching Dora, going into your basement and playing dress-up with all of your princess and superhero costumes, it was controlled and put into stages. Their childhood was always a test, and ways to serve the community. Even when they were so little, not being able to volunteer or help out much, everything they did was being watched and evaluated to one day provide for the society. It's not just a 5 word phrase. It's a window to see the real things his society goes through, and how stuff everything really is.

One of Jonas’s instructions was that he is completely exempted from the rule regarding rudeness. He can go up to anyone in society, no matter of their status, and ask them any question no matter how personal, and he will get an answer. Jonas has always been trained to not ask personal questions, just to not be rude in general. One of a kind that no one else will receive for a long time, so there may be different rules but what if… what if every adult has received that instruction on their folder when they became a twelve? What if he has been lied to this whole time? Is there really a reason he should now believe anyone? Or has all of the “truths” he has been told, been flat out lies.

Connection: In our society it is really an unspoken rule that lying is bad, and it’s not something you should do. It’s common sense to know that lying isn’t right. I shouldn’t really say it’s an “unspoken rule” because myself, and many people have been taught as we’ve grown up not to lie. Do we really ever know if someone is lying though? We can always make assumptions based on their gestures, tone of voice, or past information we have about them and the situation, but we really never know. Someone could tell us an open faced lie, and we could never find out. It could be little white lies or it could be big things. Even if you ask someone, and they say they aren’t lying, that could be a lie too. It’s the whole premise of trust. We build up this trust in people that they won’t lie, but we never really know. Just like Jonas doesn’t know if everyone has been lying to him, or if it’s only him who has received this instruction.

We are finally properly introduced the the Receiver, the talk of the past few chapters. When Jonas first entered the room where the Receiver was in, he was in shock. He only looked around for a few seconds, before noticing the man sitting in the chair. He nervously gave a slight bow and said hello, referring to the man sitting in the chair as "The Receiver". The man quickly corrected him and said that from this point on, he will think of Jonas as the Receiver. Jonas mentions how old he must be, and he laughs a little and makes a comment about he has much time left, he just looks older than he is, how this job has aged him. He also says that when he was a Receiver he came to this exact same place that Jonas is currently training at. His entire job is to transfer his memories to Jonas, but not just his memories, the memories of the whole world, and the memories of the previous Receiver.

Another breakthrough chapter for Jonas, when he finds out that there is an entire past. The Receiver mentions a reference about sledding and snow, and Jonas is standing there confused about what snow is and what a sled is. He is clueless. I doesn't know what they looks like, or what the terms even means. The Receiver tells Jonas that he must lay down and he is going to perform his first memory transfer. He is going to transfer the memory of snow, so Jonas can see it, and know what it is.
Another less important, but still another part of the chapter that just proves that everyone is de-humanized, is that when Jonas walks into the room the Receiver is in he is in awe about the furniture. Furniture that is completely normal for us, is so bizarre and new for him. He says the fabrics on the chairs were thicker and more luxurious than the ones at his dwelling, the table legs were sturdier, curved and slender, and the bed was draped with a designed cloth. He also notices the books. So many books. He knows that there certain books at his dwelling that describe the basic things in society, but sees the bookshelves lining the walls from floor to ceiling with hundreds of thousands of books.

There is a small room with one desk, and one woman working, and then he enters this luxurious room with nice furniture, somany books and the large Receiver's chair.

Connection: There isn't many connections we can make to this chapter because we can't relate to becoming a Receiver of memory. However, we can relate to the overflow of emotions Jonas is feeling. With every new experience, we always feel a set of emotions towards them a lot of the time they will be big ones, many that we can't control. Jonas is feeling anxious about this upcoming chapter of his life. It's a new experience therefore new emotions come with it. I think everyone can relate to feeling new things towards new experiences.

The Receiver simply places his hands on Jonas's back three different times and Jonas feels three different feelings. He first feels cold, and feels an unknown substance swirling around him. He first describes it as pinpricks, but then corrects himself as he feels these tiny flakes of white to be cold but soft. He catches them on his tongue but when they touch they disappear. He says he likes the feeling. During the snow, he realises he is sitting on a sled. As a bit of time passes the sled starts moving and Jonas feels the exhilaration of quickly sliding down the hill, the wind in his face. He's excited, and happy.

He has fresh blood dripping down his body and bright red carnage. He's in a grey uniform, lying on the ground saying water. Jonas looked at his arm and saw fragments of bone and fresh blood dripping down his arm. He finds that he is able to move his other arm, therefore he reaches down and grabs the small metal bottle filled with water, and pours it into the boys mouth. The water drips down his chin and he sighs and puts his head back. He takes a deep breath and a "coat of lifelessness" lines the boy's eyes. He's dead, but Jonas doesn't know what death means or what it looks like. He just sees the boy blankly staring into the sky. Jonas stays in the memory for hours, until he too is laying on the ground knowing that death is what comes next. Then his opens his eyes, and The Giver looks away in embarrassment, and shame in the pain he has just caused Jonas to experience.

In this chapter Jonas experiences more memories that to him are completely new and unheard of, but to us are so simple. He experiences a birthday party, going through the museum and seeing the art, riding horses etc. He also experiences the Giver's favourite, and most joyful memory, which is what we know as Christmas. He sees the lights, and the fire, and the tree which he finds is so strangely inside of the house. He sees old people, who he believes should be in the house of the old with people. Small children sitting on their laps. A family, not a family unit, but a family. He feels a sensation in the room, that he can't quite put his finger on. Later in the chapter, The Giver introduces Jonas to the feeling known as "Love". Jonas quite likes the feeling. It makes him feel good. As much as he loves how he feels in this memory, he believes that the life we call normal is dangerous because of many different elements. We also see at the very end of this chapter that Jonas stops taking the pills he is supposed to take to suppress his stirrings.

In this chapter Jonas learns about the feeling of love through the memory of Christmas. he states that he quite enjoys the feeling, and didn't want it to end. The Giver briefly explained the feeling and Jonas saw the example of the family who loved each other on Christmas. When he is back at his dwelling, during the evening meal, Jonas uses his ability to ask questions to his advantage and asks his parents if they love him. They scold him for not using precise language, and give him examples of different wordings he should've used, but never answered the question. After asking Jonas if he understands what they are trying to tell him about not using the term love, he agrees, stating he understands, his first lie to his parents.

There is a popular quote that states "All kids deserve parents, but not all parents deserve kids." I know that the parents in this society have been breeded to not feel love toward their children but this is completely inhumaine. Jonas who is just a kid, sees a loving family, and he enjoys the feeling. He wants to know and hopes he is loved to, and his parents can't even answer the question. I know it's not their fault, but it's quite sad how parents can't even tell their kid they love him.

Jonas experiences the snow memory again, but this time it's not pleasant and it's filled with pain and excruciating experiences. The snow on the hill is hard, not soft and pillowy as before, and there is a layer of ice coating it. Instead of feeling excited like last time, he feels terrified, and the sled starts moving down the hill. Jonas tries to steer but he can't, there is nothing he can do. He hits a rough patch and then flies out of the sled landing hard on the ice as he hears a crack and feels his leg distort. There is adrenaline, but as soon as it wears off he starts screaming, and sobbing. He turns over and throws up all over the ice. The pain is unbearable. He sees the blood dripping from his head and he doesn't stop sobbing. When he comes out of the mekory his leg is still in unimaginable pain, and begs for medicine, but The Giver reinforces the rule of no medicine. He feels lonely. Knowing he is the only one who experiences this pain. He wants to have people share the memories with him and The Giver that way they don't have to bear all of this pain themselves. Gabe also starts staying in Jonas's room, and when he fusses, Jonas starts to accidentally give him the memory of the sailboat, but he stops fussing, and now he gives Gabe peaceful memories without telling anyone.

We know he has had experiences such as scraping his knee, but this is the first time he really has experienced pain that we experience in our "normal world".

here is much new information revealed about Jonas in this chapter, some bigger things and some smaller things. We learn that after stopping taking his pill, his stirrings have returned for the past four weeks. The pleasant dreams and feelings that e feels some guilt towards have returned. He also has a few realizations. Jonas now has the capacity to feel emotions, because of the memories he now possess, but he realizes he is the only one who is truly capable of feeling such heavy emotions. The Giver has access to some of these memories, he knows what emotion is, but because he has given the majority away to Jonas, he doesn’t have the full capacity to feel emotion. the community has no capacity to feel emotion they don’t even know what emotion is, or how to deal with the simple feelings they feel. He states that now, after these memories, after truly feeling emotion, he wouldn’t go back to his previous life and level of knowledge.

That “Elsewhere”, wherever that may be, there is another Lily, another Jonas etc. They can’t have two people who are alike in the same community so they send the twin “Elsewhere”.

We are now reaching the end of the book, therefore the themes are becoming clearer. I think that one of the author’s themes could be loneliness. Jonas went from spending time with his friends, speaking freely with his family, living a normal life, to spending his time at school, then with one man, in one room, every at, then briefly to his dwelling to see his family unit and sleep. It’s not just about eh lack of people back the lack of relation. Jonas ha gone through unthinkable pain, he possesses something that nobody else does, he knows more than anyone, and most of all he feels. Nobody else can relate to him, he is in solitude with his feelings, he has no one other than The Giver to confide in, and with this capacity of feelings, the relationships with his friends have become distant, and it shows that it affects Jonas.

People will really see that life before, normalcy, pain, joy, colour, and so much more. Jonas is going to leave during the night and go farther, and farther away from the village until he finds Elsewhere, and the memories are transferred back to the community. This plan will likely get Jonas killed and he knows that, but he is willing to take that risk if it means society will be better.

Jonas was sitting at the table with his family unit and heard that Gabe cried all night at the Nurturing Centre without Jonas there, and he is scheduled to be Released the next morning. Jonas panicked but did his best to stay calm, and his father confirmed that he also voted for Gabe’s release as well. Jonas leaves his house as planned int he dead of night but instead of taking his own, he steaks his father’s bike at it has the child seat that will carry Gabe. He decides that he won’t let Gabe be released and he brings the toddler with him. As they biked Jonas’s legs became sore and then eventually numb but they were strong. They would bike at night so they were les likely to be seen, and during the day they would hide and sleep as search planes were out searching for them. When the planes would go by, Jonas would transfer memories of cold that way they don’t trigger the heat sensors on the plane. As the days went on the plans came less and less often until there were none to be seen at all.

As Jonas keeps cycling, him and Gabe start to become more tired, weaker, hungrier and Jonas’s fears change from being caught, to starving. He remembered being chastised in is community for not using the word starving properly, and them telling him he would never be starving, but now he genuinely was. He also saw rain for the for the first time as well, he remembered rain being this happy memory, something not exactly cheerful, but something that brought him calm and joy. This time it just made him and Gabe wet, uncomfortable and cold. He continued to ride on and he was confident Elsewhere was close, but it was snowing now they were both exhausted, starving, numb, and cold. Jonas didn’t have much faith that either of them would make it to Elsewhere alive. He could tell e was very far, and the community was in a bad state because his memories were faint, and faded, he only possède some of them now. He had transferred the faint memory of warm to him and Gabe and even though it was faint, and quick it seemed like his will to survive had returned. The cold eventually returned, and the two become numb. Then a surge of joy hit Jonas. It wasn’t warmth, but it was piece and jo, if anything he become more numb, but he started to feel a surge of happiness and joy. He heard faint music, felt the echos of love and content. He saw a sled, similar to his fist memory atop hill fo fluffy snow. There was no ice, he would not fall and experience the pain and agony of his last endeavour down the hill. he was sliding into a village with lights, music, people singing, the love that he had once in felt in the memory of Christmas that was now so vague. All of his favourites were coming back to him he could feel all the joy… Or was it just an echo…

The Giver - Conclusion

This book, in my opinion did not have a good conclusion. Jonas and Gabe were suffering as a cause of hypothermia, exhaustion and starvation, and Jons didn’t think he could go on any longer. He desperately tried to transfer a memory of warmth and succeeded, but it was jut bief. He eventually felt joy start to creep in to his feelings. He heard music, and felt the joy and the love. He didn’t feel less cold, but slowly he began to feel more numb. They said that he sledded down a hill of fluffy snow with Gabe starting to see a village with bright colourful lights, houses, and as he got closer the the village he heard the singing and the feeling of love, peace and joy become closer. The last line of the book says “or was it all just an echo” insinuating that what Jonas is seeing is not real. He is delusional and its a hallucination. With further inference you can guess that they both have died, and Jonas is reminiscing on the good memories before he goes.

He has dark hair, pale eyes and wears a red tunic. This information is slowly revealed through different chapters.

The Giver - Personal Thoughts

I know that many people in my class didn’t seem to enjoy the book, and I myself was quite frustrated at the end, however, I will not lie because it was a good book. I had a lot of questions, I was intrigued, and it was a fun book to read, and find out answers to questions that were asked at the beginning. There were a couple of good plot twists and shock moments, and overall, it was a good read. This is more of a personal opinion but I like books that have quite a bit of action and have me really intrigued and hooked, and this book was quite slow paced, the plot twists were mediocre, and a lot of the time expected, and it was very repetitive. I also believe, as many other do and have clearly voiced that the ending was the worst part. My friend did some research and shared with me an article she found saying that Jonas and Gabe haven’t actually died, and it is revealed in later books that Jonas got married to a character from one of Lois Lowry’s “Giver Sequels”, and had a family obviously including Gabe. All of that said, without doing the research you would think they just die. All of the build up, the questions, the element of some suspense for nothing. I found the book to be a bit boring and it started to take a turn for the worse at chapters 18-19 when we found out the true meaning of being released. That set a quite morbid curveball flying, and frankly ruined the story a bit. It was a great book to write reports on because there was usually quite a bit of information to report, and questions to ask. Overall, I would rate this book a seven out of ten because it was a good read, a very rushed ending, they packed all of the important information quickly into the last 5 chapters, other than the ending it was very slow, and the ending was quite a let down.

When the scene of Jonas and Gabe sledding into a town full of lights, music, joy, singing, love, and happiness is described, it is describing the memory that Jonas once received which is the memory of Christmas. This village is what I picture Jonas sliding into. Snow covered roads, fluffy, white flakes falling from the night sky, tall trees dancing in the breeze with lights shining through the white blanket of snow covering them, wooden houses covered in multicoloured lights, music and laugher echoing throughout, a certain warmth in the air that cuts through the bitter cold, and the feeling of love that makes you heart flutter and spreads through your body like wildfire.

He was so distraught. Reluctant to move, blink, speak, breathe even. As his vision adjusted to the pitch black he looked at the inside of the closet door. He heard a voice, and loud thumping steps advancing into his room. His worst nightmare, and his cruel successor, me. His heart was beating out of his chest, and cold, salty tears flowed down his cheeks. He felt an extremely palpable sense of fear, it consumed him. The door swung open and any breath escaped from his lungs as he felt large hands emphatically grasp his legs, burning his back on the carpet as he was dragged out of his hiding space. The man jeered, laughing as he saw the boy’s tears fall faster and more frequently. I turned and my eyes went wide when I saw the boy laying on the ground. It only took me a second to realize who it was. The man pulled out a knife, with red gems intricately placed along the handle. He spun it around in his hand, and as the boy looked at the man’s hand, he saw a conspicuous, deep pink scar that climbed up his forearm. I turned to the man, not knowing his name still; “Sir, you never told me who we were going to be killing tonight.” The man gave me a frown, but didn’t say anything. More desperately now, I spoke again, “Sir, do you know who this is?” Again, the man looked back but didn't say anything, just smiled. The boy gasped, as the knife plunged into his stomach. Hot, red blood immediately spread across every surface. The man ripped the knife out and let him fall to the floor. I was frozen, tears started to fall down my face. The man came up to me, and was mere inches away from my face when he quietly said “Of course I know who this is, that’s why I brought you” I felt sick. Dizzy, nauseous, like I would collapse. Then the man left and I ran to the body lying on the floor. He was covered in blood. I cried, and stared down at him. He gave me a weak, rueful grin. He knew his time was up, but he grabbed my hand. He opened his mouth and blood spewed, but he faintly said “It’s okay. It’s not your fault, but now, you have to do what is right.” His grip on my hand loosened, and he started blankly at the ceiling. Gone. Just like that. It took a minute to sink in, but I turned over and threw up when I realized what I had just done. I just helped kill my own brother.
