Wayne Blair uses the scene of Cynthia reaching down and fidgeting with her ring finger to show her emotions to the audience. Cynthia reaches down and gently fidgets with a gold engagement ring situated on her left ring finger. This is done a few moments after Cynthia's mother comforts her about being left at the alter. From this information we can infer that that ring is her engagement ring. Further more, the gentle way in which Cynthia fidgets with the ring indicates that she still cares about it, and therefore the man that she was due to marry.

The shot is an extreme close up that is illuminated in soft white light. This soft lighting is reflected in the sombre and gentle mood of the scene. The extreme close up is also intended to force the audience focus on the ring.

All of these factors combined show the audience that Cynthia cares deeply about her engagement. The conversation prior being about the failure of this engagement provides the audience with the insight that Cynthia grieves of her fiancé. Therefore the conclusion can be drawn that Cynthia is upset about her failed engagement.
