Singling out students makes them embarrassed in front of their peers and sometimes can result in a larger behavior to take place after. I also think that we as teachers are great actors and that is something that I rely on from time to time. Students want to learn from someone who is excited and happy to see them, spend their day with them and is enthusiastic about the lessons. I took that role very seriously and I incorporated a lot of culture days and activities. My classroom was not particularly diverse in terms of student body, so I did my best to make sure that the curriculum would be.

Specific strategies I've seen done successfully involve the bucket filling style rewards. X amount of puff balls = class reward--movie day, pajama day, extra recess, etc. I have only seen this in the younger grades because those are the rooms I work with closely.

Also, I am a giant goofball, so I am not afraid to be silly in front of students to get them excited to learn. When I'm excited, they will be excited.
