Last year during my practicum I ran an imaginative activity with my students using the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The goal was for students to create their own 3-6 SDG's about goals they wanted to reach by the time they graduated high school. These students were apart of a grade 9 geography class, this activity helped students visualize the importance of some goals and their timelines.

Creative Studying: Terminology Scavenger Hunt

Last year during my first practicum, I was in a grade 9 geography class. Students had to study for an upcoming quiz and I wanted them to be able to enjoy studying. Therefore, I hid definitions of geographic terms all around the room and had students match them to the terms I gave them. This was a fun and competitive way for students to memorize terminology.

This world can contain anything they want and can resemble anything! While ensuring students are gaining curricular knowledge of map dimensions, they can work their imagination to their advantage!

Similar to the lessons done in Chapter 3: Curiosity and Literacy, I would love to have a GIS specialist or cartographer come into my class as a special guest. This would give students the opportunity to view a wide variety of maps and expand their curiosity about the topic. This could also be applied to other topics within geography and contain additional guests such as climate activists, environmental planners, local farmers or an explorer!
