(Jen) One thing that resonates with me is getting to know students stories. It's important to know background on students as well as what is occurring in their every day life. Each class period we do something for a few minutes where students share a positive or negative about their day/week.

I actually used this activity (connect the dots) in the beginning of the school year in my Calculus class. I wanted them to know that the course may seem so difficult because the problems are not always straightforward. they have to think outside the box to have a chance to be successful in the course. A lot of times a problem that seems to be difficult is actually very easy if you're not focused much on the details but rather taking a time to see the big big picture. I have some kids who were really frustrated by the activity and I used it as an example as how they would deal with their frustrations throughout the duration of the course.
