Denotation- a silvery-white metal

Connotation-  Disgusting, bad, hard, cold, stiff, sharp

As tin is a hard metal, it shows her dislike for the name, and conveys a feeling of distaste to the reader. 

I think the author used this to go more indepth into Esperenza’s hatred of her name. Had she used a lighter, softer, object, the reader would have thought she liked her name. Instead they get the feeling of intolerance. Tin is a hard object that would be painful to hold in your mouth, which converys the “pain” the Esperenza gets from her name.

Although I'm only 76 pages in, there have already been a number of scenes that caught my attention. The author has talked about the grief of losing a child, someone who has lost the use of their legs, and someone who's family is now most likely dead.
