Educational context: Further Education
Target Learners: Further Education students studying a post-leaving certificate course in Education and Training at Whitehall College of Further Education.
Learning Design approach: ABC Learning Design
Timing: 60-90 minute fully online asynchronous learning session.

Session Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the session, students will be able to:

1. Discuss why listening skills are important.
2. List ways to improve your listening skills.
3. Put into practice what listening skills they have learned from the session.

2. Acquisition: Google Slides and YouTube Videos

Aim: To introduce the topic of listening skills.

The video lecture will introduce the learners to the topic of listening skills by presenting information about the topic through Google Slides. YouTube videos will be included in these slides to give further information about listening skills.

Timing: 20 minutes.

Resources: Google Slides and YouTube.

1. Discussion: Padlet

Aim: To allow students to participate and express their own understanding of the topic.

Ask learners what is the first thing that comes to their mind when they hear 'listening skills'. Along with other questions to do with listening skills.

Timing: 5 minutes.

Resources: Padlet.

3. Investigation: Research using digital resources

Aim: To allow the learners to carry out their own research into the topic of listening skills. This will allow them to add more information.

The learners will answer the question about the topic and carry out their research. The learners will show their research through a personal report on Google Docs.

Timing: 15 minutes

Resources: Internet, YouTube and Google Docs.

4. Collaboration: Pair work using Padlet

Aim: To allow the learners to work in pairs to carry out their ideas and research to form a finished project.

Support on the project will be provided through a shared Padlet.

The learners will work on their part of the project to create a scene where one of the learners is a teacher and the other will be the student. They will both swap roles so each of them can show what Listening Skills they have learned.

The learner teacher will provide the student learner with a small presentation in which they will have to use the listening skills that they have learned to help them.

The learners will record their presentations on Zoom.

They will use Google Slides to help them structure their topic to be discussed.

Timing: 15 minutes

Resources: Digital resources and Padlet.

5. Production: A recorded project through Zoom

Aim: The Learners will create a presentation where they will use the listening skills that they have learned.

Both students in their pairs will take the role of being a teacher and the role of being a student using important skills such as eye contact, reactions to body language, and feedback to questions.

Timing: 10 minutes

Resources: Zoom, Google Slides.

6. Practice: Quiz on Blooket

Aim: To conclude the session, learners will carry of an enjoyable quiz on what they have learned.
