As a nurse working in a medical-surgical unit, my daily tasks involve a range of procedures focused on patient care and recovery. Some of the most common include monitoring vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate), administering medications orally, intravenously, or intramuscularly, and setting up IV fluids for hydration or treatment.

We also perform blood draws for lab tests, check blood glucose levels in diabetic patients, and assist with diagnostic tests like electrocardiograms (ECGs). In addition, we provide wound care, performing regular dressing changes and monitoring healing.

Our role goes beyond technical skills—we’re constantly observing the patient’s overall condition, offering emotional support, and serving as a vital link between the medical team and the patient.

As a nursing student, I’ve learned that pharmacology is very important in surgery.

 Before surgery, patients may receive medications to relax, reduce pain, or prevent infection. These include antibiotics, sedatives, and analgesics.

After surgery, nurses administer medications to help with pain, reduce inflammation, and prevent blood clots. These medications vary depending on the pathology or infection. They are:

• Metoclopramide: prevents nausea •Ranitidine: prevents reflux

•Ciprofloxacin: treats infection

•Diclofenac or Ketorolac: to relieve pain.

It is important to know the effects, dosages, and side effects of each medication to care for the patient safely.

 • Medication: Use of 21G needles, 5 or 10 ml syringe, cotton, and alcohol. It is administered intravenously and diluted.

 Vital signs must be taken before and after surgery to assess the patient’s general health, detect possible complications, monitor response to anesthesia and the procedure, and guide postoperative treatment and recovery.

•Temperature: Measures body heat, indicating fever or hypothermia.

•Heart rate (pulse): Indicates the speed at which the heart beats per minute, reflecting the efficiency of the circulatory system.

•Respiratory rate: Measures the number of breaths a person takes per minute, indicating the efficiency of the respiratory system.

•Blood pressure: Measures the force of blood against the artery walls, indicating the health of the circulatory system.
